Keeper advice

Postby GoldenHawk » Thu Jan 29, 2009 11:08 pm

Hey guys,

I just adopted a team after another owner left with the following keepers:

The league is an 8x8 (with Ks, Walks, total bases as the extra hitting cats and CGs, holds, Losses as extra pitchign cats)

Its a roto league with the standard positions and one Util spot (no CI, MI etc) and 3 OF spots.

1) Ortiz
2) Lincecum
3) Haren
4) Markakis
5) Abreu
6) Ludwick
7) Ervin Santana
8) BJ Ryan

I have picks 3, 8, 27, 39, 51, etc

Now the key item in the league as once guys are kept for 4 years they are released back into the draft so this year the following guys are available. I have the 3rd and 8th pick. so i asssume I should be taking whoever is there between the first three i listed. My question is at 8 should I consider taking Johan/Peavy to lock down my pitching or if a hitter who should I take based on my lineup so far. I assume the draft from discussions will go roughly Wright, Pujols, Arod (me), Cabrera, Sizemore, Rollins for the first 6 picks.

Pujols
ARod
Wright
Sizemore
Miguel Cabrera
Rollins
Teix
Howard
Johan
Peavy
Berkman
Webb
Halladay
Beltran
Carlos Lee
Ichiro
Felix
Zambrano
Hafner
Vmart
Oswalt etc

ANy insight id really appreciate it. Leave me a link.

Yeah i am somewhat handcuffed because Ortiz will be at my utility and Arod at 3B so i guess id need to go 1B or Rollins if hes there right?

Is teix more valuable than howard given the strikeout totals? and I assume pitchers arent even a consideration for me? The key with these two picks is i lock them down for 4 years so i want to make the best choice possible obviously..

I also have Brad Hawpe, James Loney and Kershaw. Would they be worthy keepers over any of the guys I listed. The one item to note is Markakis costs me two keeper spots (because its his 4th year) so technically i could keep both Hawpe and Loney in his place. Would that be worthwhile even as good as Markakis is as Id have to release him after this year anyways?

My keepers would then be Ortiz, Lincecum, Haren, Abreu, Ervin Santana, BJ Ryan, Ludwick, Loney and Hawpe.

from the look of your keepers you could use some power and speed. Don't take a pitcher, there will be plenty of quality ones later in the draft. I would take Wright with the 3rd and either miggy or sizemore with the 8th.

Why are you keeping a closer by the way? The quality you give up really reduces flexibility. Personally not a fan.

This might be nutty, but i'd at least consider Halladay with that pick. He gives you basically twice as many CG's as any other pitcher in the league besides Sabathia (who probably won't go the distance nearly so much in NY) , and i'd be hesitant to snag Santana (declining K rate) or Peavy (traded away from Petco?). Now, I wouldn't take Halladay over a guy like Sizemore, Rollins, Teix ... but if the choice comes down to Howard or Halladay, I might lean Halladay.

Definitely keep Markakis. He's even better in your scoring system than in 5x5.
