So I won my league last year and we keep 3 players (1 hitter, 1 pitcher and 1 of either). It's a 10 team H2H league with the following categories: R, H, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, OPS, IP, W, L, CG, SHO, SV, K, ERA, WHIP
My keepers will be Alex Rodriguez, Ryan Braun and Tim Lincecum.
So judging by most mock drafts and players already being kept, I am guessing I will have my choice of players in this pool of players:
Adrian Gonzalez Ichiro Brandon Phillips Haren Joe Mauer Papelbon KRod Nathan Rivera Vlad Prince Fielder (maybe) Lackey Brian Roberts Matt Kemp
So who should I take? ARod and Braun provide power and will contribute in every category. Lincecum is obviously a stud. I was thinking about going for scarce positions - maybe B Phillips and Mauer to cover 2B and catcher - then I can target another starter and possibly a stud closer with my next 2 picks. Thoughts?
I like your thoughts. Out of those available and with your stud keepers I would definitely draft Phillips if he is there. Mauer would be a solid second pick or you could go with a closer if you want. I would probably take the top 2 hitters on the board first and then grab someone like Haren if he is there followed by a closer.

Agreed.
Plus, in H2H, build on your strengths (currently 2B/HR/RBI, etc.)
1. Prince Fielder 2. Adrian Gonzalez 3. Brandon Phillips ------------------------------------ 4. Matt Kemp 5. Ichiro 6. Joe Mauer 7. Brian Roberts (may be a little low, I never was the big fan of him) ------------------------------------ 8. Vlad 9. Haren 10. Papelbon/Nathan/KRod 11. Lackey 12.Rivera
Sorry, in a H2H, Ichiro is a stud with his hits. Throw in runs, SB, and BA. and he has to go with one of the first two picks. If Fielder is there go for him and you will be taken care of in power/RBI with Purple Lips, Braun and Fielder. Ichiro is a cornerstone for everything else.
Based on the stats used in your league Ichiro jumps out, but Kemp could be a great 2nd pick. definatly don't worry about position scarcity early in the draft.....get your points now, 2 great hitters, and then worry about position. Keep an eye on Roberts with your rules.
Brandon Phillips scares me a bit but I was looking heavily at Ichiro - if I picked up him and Adrian Gonzalez (or B Phillips) that'd give me a starting 5 of
ARod Braun Lincecum Ichiro A Gonzalez/ B Phillips
Arod and Bruan are 5 tool guys, so they will contribute across the board. A combination and either of those other 2 guys would give me a nice blend of power, speed and the tough categories like triples and stolen bases that most people neglect.
The pro to drafting Phillips there is the scarcity of 2nd basemen - I could pick up another 1st baseman later on who will still produce some pop.
So if I went Ichiro and either of those guys, should I target another starter and maybe a stud closer with my next 2 picks?
