Giambi on verge with A's

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the A's are on the verge of completing a one-year, $5.25 million deal with Jason Giambi.

If Olney's numbers are correct, it's a major steal for Oakland. The contract also carries an option for 2010 worth just $4 million. Giambi made $23.5 million last season and hit .247/.373/.502 with 32 dingers and 96 RBI.

Funny, I was thinking their lineup is going to be improved this year as well.
Renteria is notorious for doing great in the NL and absolutely horrid in the AL.
Cardinals (.300, mid teen HR) --> Red Sox (.270, below 10 HR)
Braves (.300, mid teen HR) --> Tigers (.270, lower HR)

Maybe he'll do well again back in the NL, add in some young guys like Sandoval, Fred Lewis improving, the Giants offense should give some more run support to that very good starting pitching staff.

Ya you don't see that very often. In fact I'm quite surprised by this with Giambi because of much he was making last year.

Would be a very potent offense at times, yet Holliday could end up with smaller RBI opportunities.

Heyman interviewed on WFAN today and he guessed that Abreu ends up in Oakland as well, since they still have the $40 million they offered Furcal and Giambi came real cheap.

Their lineup looks pretty good as is, add Abreu to the middle of it and the A's are looking great for '09.
