Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said he would consider using Chris Carpenter as the team's closer this season, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
More affirmation that La Russa has no faith in his youngsters. Hard-throwing relievers Chris Perez and Jason Motte are chomping at the bit in the St. Louis bullpen, yet their manager thinks he'll get more out of a 33-year-old who has spent over a year dealing with shoulder problems.

TLR doesn't seem to have any faith in Perez but if Carpenter is healthy he will be a SP. Tony wants the Cardinals to sign a closer and this is his gentle nudge through the media.
Cardinals manger Tony La Russa acknowledged Monday that the organization has interest in free agent closer Brandon Lyon.
La Russa has basically admitted that he has no faith in Chris Perez or Jason Motte. "The optimum thing is not to ask Chris or Jason to close in '09," said the manager on Monday. "Let them grow into the role when they're ready to take it. So who else is out there?" Lyon saved 26 games for the Diamondbacks last season while posting an ERA of 4.70 and a WHIP of 1.48. He struck out 44 batters in 59 1/3 innings. Source: St. Louis Post-Dispatch Related: Chris Perez, Jason Motte, Cardinals

He likes Jaun Cruz more, but he will also cost more.
IMO cperez is the real deal and will have a huuuge spring training and, even TLR will have to grudgingly give him the ball in the 9th inning... brandon lyon !!! c'mon, tony, 59 IP last year and guys hit .310 off him
