I know some will disagree with this, but I would wait until around rounds 6-9 and take Angel Berroa. I think he is going to have a breakout year where he will hit 290+ 20+HR and around 90 RBI....His team added a lot more protection and production to their lineup and he should only benefit and this will allow you to take a SP or a 2Bman earlier, rather than Nomar or Renteria....I think 2B is very shallow this year, I am not sold on Giles without Sheffield protecting him.
I have Tejeda as the # 4 SS. Edgar is more consistent, gives you
some SBs and I think will hit more HRs this year. If Renteria is
available at 18, he is a no brainer. If he's gone, I would grab
Rolen. Just my opinion.
Renteria, Tejada, and Nomar are all very close. Renteria and Tejada are have more value because you can get them later in the draft than Nomar. I'd put them in this order:
Renteria
Tejada
Nomar
Unless Nomar plays like he did in 98 and 99, I'm picking him last out of that group. Tejada is very consistent and is probably going ot have more SB chances, and Renteria is in such a good situation, and was awesome last year. Tough call, and some would disagree (mostly people basing it on name recognition), but I have to go with Renteria in this situation.
"Jack, will you call me, if you're able?"
"I've got your phone number written, in the back of my Bible."
IMO I feel that renteria has the most consistancy out of the three. I had him in my keeper league last season and it seemed like he went 2-5, 2run,rbi,sb...... but........................ nomar is nomar and i think he is the more of a franchise player imo, if that makes sense.
It's Nomar, no question. I would rather have Nomar. Unfortunately, somebody always takes Nomar before I'm comfortable doing so. On the other hand, late second or early third round is a good time for Renteria or Tejada.
If all three are available, and it's my pick at the end of round 2 or later, give me Nomar.
Last year, I got smoked in the first round of the playoffs as Nomar, Millar and Mueller ALL went down the tubes on their west coast road trip. Where is Boston the first week of this year's playoffs? Uh, the west coast again!!
I snagged Berroa pretty late, I hope that you are right about him taking off!!
i agree on the berroa idea. I see him having a year that could come pretty close to nomar/rent. 20/20 with close to 100runs and 100rbi with a .280 avg. I'll take that from my SS especially if it means I can take him in rounds 6-8 instead of during the first three.
But it's dangerous to focus too much on grabbing a player in a draft. If you're in a Yahoo Public league, some pretty big studs are bound to fall into your hands. EX: I drafted Prior at 11, Manny at 14, Renteria at 35, Rolen at 38...I was thinking Berroa in the early middle rounds too, but Renteria at the end of the 3rd?...sounded good to me. Basically, just grab the best player available.
Nomar over Renteria... But I pass on them both, and Berroa as well... and even later grab.. Kaz Matsui, or Jose Reyes.. and laugh all the way to the bank
