Crede to San Fran?

Joe Crede-3B- White Sox Jan. 2 - 2:08 pm et

The Giants have looked at free agent Joe Crede's medical records and are considering a bid, according to SI.com's Jon Heyman.

Crede would have made more sense prior to the Edgar Renteria addition. What the Giants needed was one great infielder, not two lesser talents. If they did sign Crede, then they'd stick Pablo Sandoval at first base and send both Travis Ishikawa and John Bowker back to the minors.

could be a cheap low risk signing for the giants, with renteria's defense on the decline it'd be nice to put a good defending 3B to his right. pablo could then move over to 1B where he wouldnt be such a defensive liability.

i would hope its somewhere around $3-4M, much more than that would be overpaying imo.

His highest OBP in a major league season (excluding the 14 ABs in 2000) is .323
Not the sexiest.

If he is fully fit and only costs $1-2 mil max he might be worth the gamble for the draft picks.
He'd have to be outstanding in the field to make up for a ~.300 OBP.

his value is most definitely in his defense. according to fangraphs he was worth $8.1M in 2008 in only 100 games, despite being negative value in batting with a .313 OBP.

Wow that's more then I thought.
I thought his SLG + defense would be worth $4-5 mil - hence me wanting to pay $1-2.

Hopefully for your sake Boras doesn't use the hypno-sphere on Sabean.

While Crede's OBP is lousy, his career slugging is almost .450, or about 70 points higher than SF hit as a team. If he can stay healthy and hit like that, his fielding will make him pretty valuable. Don't forget that AL hitters switching to the NL tend to get a bump in performance, too.

Interesting. I've never heard that. I can see pitchers doing better going from the AL to the NL due to the pitchers parks and the lack of DH rule.
