This is a possible steal for some team. He was one of the best defensive center fielders . Maybe he has learned a lesson. He may be the victim of too much success and money at an early age . He just couldn't handle it and let himself go. He also had trouble with swinging at bad pitches. Even with that , he still hit a lot of homeruns and with his plus defence he was valuable to a team.
So if he could get his hunger back ( for Baseball :-D ) , he could be worth taking a chance on.
If he has some success , the Dodgers would really feel some pain. They took a beating at that deal.

His decline started before 2008. Look at the difference between 2006 and 2007. Huge drop-off. Ave- .262 to .222. OPS from .894 to .724 %-6 K's went up, BB's went down. Then comes the disasterous 2008.

As far as him being a gold glover...look at his putouts which peaked at 493 in 1999, then as he began putting on weight, then began to fall to the mid to high 300's. He was a great centerfielder...he is no longer.

He was a decent hitter...he is no longer.
He was a good baserunner...he is no longer.
He was able to fit his behind into regulation baseball pants...he can no longer.

The restructure had better be real cheap. Why anyone would take a shot beyond a minor league invite is beyond me.

I wonder if Atlanta doesn't want him whether he'll "lower" himself to a Pittsburgh or Washington to have a incentive based comeback year.

Perhaps Boras will twist his arm up his back to make him do it.
