Tough trade decision

Postby Tramplers » Thu Jan 01, 2009 7:30 am

We can keep 5 players in standard 5X5. I have Kinsler and have been offered Brandon Phillips and Alexi Ramierez for him. Kinsler is in the top 2 with Utley but Ramierez and Phillips are real close behind at 2B, and Ram also qualifies at SS. I already have Beltran and Prince as keepers but my other candidates are not set. I am leaning towards taking it but wanted some input in case I have missed any news or updates on the players.

Possible keepers

Prince
Beltran
Kinsler
Pence
Hawpe
Doumit
Nelson Cruz
Matt Garza

I think I would do that trade. I have Kinsler and Phillips pretty close , with an edge to Kinsler. But getting Ramirez also makes this a good deal. He can play 2B, ss, and CF . This gives you some nice flexibility. Ramirez should be good for 25 hr's which is nice for the positions he plays.
As far as speed, Phillips should match Kinsler , so you don't lose anything there.

i'm not a huge fan of the trade for you as i don't really like to give up the best player in the deal when you keep so few, but your 5th keeper (probably hawpe) could use an upgrade so this is one of those times when it's probably an upgrade to trade a 1 for 2. so i'd pull the trigger and keep fielder, beltran, phillips, ramirez, pence.

I'd make the trade. Phillips has already shown he has 30 homer pop and is a lock for 25+ steals. While you won't get the high batting average Kinsler should bring, the other cats. should be fairly similar. Your other keepers are not so glamorous which makes this move all the more enticing. Alexei fits in here nicely. Do it.

From Rototimes:Phillips, 27, posted a .261 batting average with 21 home runs, 23 stolen bases and 78 RBI in 141 games this campaign. Although a good season for a second baseman, the numbers were lower than most expectations. This surgery may have owners questioning his worth for next season, but it should not take a hit. The Reds will be more explosive next season and Phillips' numbers should benefit across the board.

Generally I'd try real hard NOT to trade Kinsler. Just for kicks, in today's MDC ADP report, Kinsler is going 10th overall, with Phillips at 30 and Alexei at 52. But, the point's been made that you have a big drop off in value after Fielder and Beltran (and that's true), so the deal makes sense.

Any chance you could pull off something similar involing Beltran, get two (or three?) top players for one, and keep Kinsler? I like Beltran, but he'll be 32 this spring, and I wonder about his knees, and if there will be a time soon when he just doesn't run as much.

One thing I forgot to post, it's a 16 team league. That's one reason the keepers aren't that strong after my top 3. I have a lot of decent players to pick from for keepers 4 and 5 but I felt that dropoff may not be real great trading Kinsler for Phillips and with Alexi being able to play SS at least one year that will help in a generally weak position. My biggest concern is can Alexi build on last year. I am hoping he doesn't have the sophmore slump. I pulled the trigger on the trade so we will see what happens. Thanks for all the input.
