Happy New Year to All - 12 team roto, 6x6 (OBP, Holds), we can keep 8.
I'm overstocked at OF (mostly because Crawford and Ca.Lee finished the year on DL), and I probably need to make some deals now to upgrade at other positions. First, which 8 do you keep, and then who would you trade for? It's probably obvious - trade some OF to get 2B, 3B, or SP - but I'd also be interested in your opinions about Carl Crawford, McLouth, Kendrick, Zimmerman, E.Santana, Harang, and Cain. FYI, we use 4 OF and 2 Util spots.
R.Martin Pujols Rollins Hamilton Ca. Lee Crawford Markakis McLouth
E.Santana Oswalt
i'd obviously try to flip an OF+ one of your non-keepers (santana or oswalt probably) for a 2nd or 3rd baseman or a better pitcher. if you can't pull that off than you can either keep those 8 batters and play an OF in a util slot, or keep one of santana or oswalt over mclouth.

Well, I AM pretty confident in my ability to draft SP, BUT......
GiantsFan14 laid out exactly what you need to do. The 8 hitting keepers have the most value and can net you the best pitchers in trade if you are worried about your SP drafting.
My 8 keepers would be Pujols, Rollins, Hamilton, Lee, Crawford, Markakis, McLouth and Santana.
I'd try and flip Carlos Lee and Ervin Santana for an ace like Lincecum, Peavy, Santana, Sabathia, Hamels, Webb in no particular order. If you do that that'll leave you one keeper short and you can keep Oswalt, Cain, Zimmerman or Martin instead. I'm not crazy about keeping catchers, since they run the greatest risk of injury or wearing down, and I think the position is getting deeper. I typically like to ride the hot hand, or draft someone after the big names go off the board (Mauer, V-Mart, Soto, Martin) like maybe Doumit, Iannetta, etc. Wieters is likely on the way as well, to add more depth to the position.
The other guy I think would be a great fit for your squad would be Ian Kinsler. Even if you deal Lee, you've still got Hamilton, Crawford, Markakis and McLouth in your OF. I'd try to flip Crawford and another non-keeper for him. Crawford is a stolen base machine, but if you nab a couple more guys that chip in, you should be fine in steals. Crawford's OBP is embarassing, and he contributes no pop. People still love him, so that, I think, would likely be able to nab Kinsler. I'm a firm believer in packaging up whenever possible, even if it leaves you a little thin and top heavy, enough guys emerge that going in with a solid base can't be overstated enough.
Acquiring an ace and Kinsler would leave your keeper group looking something like:
Pujols, Kinsler, Rollins, Hamilton, Markakis, McLouth, ace (insert your top preference), and your last leftover keeper (Martin, Zimmerman, Cain, Oswalt, etc.). You'd have a TON of balance and two very thin positions filled (2B and SS). Fill in some starting pitching and you are well on your way to a great season.
Hope those suggestions were of some assistance. Any help with my question would be greatly appreciated. I'd be happy to contribute to this thread again as well if you have any questions, just post your link.
As in most keeper leagues, we finished with several teams that were overstocked, and in our case, about 3 or 4 teams that have maybe 5 or 6 keeper-level players and (if they are smart) should seek out that 3 for 1 deal. Kinsler (unfortunately) is on one of the overstocked teams, and is probably not available, but there are a few decent targets on the understocked teams - Pedroia, Youkilis, Haren.
There doesn't seem to be a "conventional" answer, because it seems like my options all involve
keeping 5 OF out of 8 keepers, or potentially going with no pitchers keepers at all, or dropping R.Martin, Oswalt, and/or E.Santana.
I'm good with making the deals though, and I like the input. Any more thoughts out there?

I like Haren as a trade target. Any chance you could post all the players on the understocked teams? As it stands, Haren is the one I really like out of the group. I'd suggest trying to flip McLouth and Oswalt for him. Haren and Santana would be two very good number 2's with potential to be aces. Also, if you think you can get some speed in the draft, I wouldn't hesitate to flip Crawford and a non-keeper like Cain/Zimmerman/Martin for Pedroia. I'm not as high on Pedroia as some, but you'd still have Lee, Markakis, Hamilton in your OF if you did both deals and would be shoring up your middle infield with Rollins/Pedroia. Thanks for the help on mine.
Team A has Mauer, Uggla, Pedroia, Rios, and Nathan, so Pedroia appeals.
Team B has Atkins, Jeter, B.J.Upton (OF), Youkilis, Damon, and Abreu, so Youkilis appeals
Team C has McCann, Teix, Longoria, Manny, and Haren. Today I offered him McLouth, Oswalt, and Zimmerman for Longoria. No word back as yet. If that fails, I could focus on Haren, but his stated intent in his note was "to add 2 or 3 bats and SP".
