This saves $, will give me 3 keeper pitchers, Possibly upgrade Tulo to Drew (is it really an upgrade??) and give me 2 lower end, cheap keepers that I can likely trade for a 3-4th round pick...
But... Utley is a stud... and Hawpe 2 years ago was about as good as Fielder last year???
But... Utley is over 30 (strange things happen to older middle infielders) and is coming off the surgery... Fielder is only 24 and has a 50 HR season already
you are correct in thinking that w/santana at $39 and wright at $42 that you have to get some players who will out earn their salaries..it is very doubtful that utley will earn $36 .. i would definitely do that trade and dump aramirez for jloney as a keeper..gallardo and loney are excellent values..that would leave you w/7 keepers = $125 (jsantana, wright, fielder, martin, tulo, loney and gallardo)..the core of 2 superstars plus a solid pfielder and 4 excellent values should line you up for a decent draft ($155 to spend)
I agree with the above posters. However, I think I would actually dump Santana at $39 for Loney at $1 and keep Aramis Ramirez for $26. I think you could get Santana for less in auction if you want him back.
We have a draft (not an auction)... Santana's value will likely be about $35 this year, so he is only slightly overpriced as a keeper. Though I have the second pick in the draft, there would be no chance of getting him back if I didn't keep him.
I'm tempted to keep Loney- great value this year- but don't know if I want to take "chances" on three or four players (Kershaw, Drew, Tulo, Loney)-- that's why keeping Hawpe- and not doing the trade- would be kind of nice. He will get his 25-30 HR and 100 rbi....
Still leaning toward the trade... trying to keep players I know I couldn't get back in the draft
I don't mind the trade at all. I'd keep Fielder and Gallardo automatically in Utley and Hawpe's spots. I believe Johan's value is just slightly overpriced too, but I think Drew can outproduce his value at $9. Loney will definitely outproduce for $1 but I think he'll still pan out to be an average CI
