Final Cafe Top 50 Minor Leaguers

Postby Diamond Miners » Tue Dec 30, 2008 12:56 am

Sorry for the delay, but thanks to oddmanout07, BigLebowski, AEMRICH, rookies and cream, jimpage, and thomasps3 for taking part in the cafe top 50 minor leaguers.

To make this list, a player had to be listed in a minimum of 3 (of 7) lists. Feel free to check out the excel spreadsheet to do your own analysis. I will also be revising this for next year as I'd like to include things like ETA, the rankings of a few prospect sites, etc.

In the spreadsheet, you'll actually see Arrieta ranks #58, but those names above him had a big boost because of one or two people who really like them. You can find the spreadsheet downloadable here:

Pretty much the top 40 could go in any order. Prospect rankings vary quite a bit from one person to the next so I'd be suprised if anyone really agreed too much with any prospect ranking list. I'd personally have quite a bit different but like I said...it's expected. It all comes down to personal preference.

Actually they usually happened in packs of 10-12. In our case, the top 3 were pretty much spot of for everyone, then 4-12 balanced around a bit, then 13-20 and 21-30 and so on. I wouldn't quite say the top 40 can go in any order because there seems to be some consistencies throughout the lists. But I'm sure Billy Beane would have a completely different list.

Well I can already say that in doing a little more research since I sent you my list a few things would have changed already.

Fowler's rank has me a bit suprised. I thought I was down on him more than most people, but it appears I'm not alone.

I think almost every GM will have a different list because they rely on their own Scouts, unlike the public which relies on the scouting reports Baseball America, John Sickles, Baseball Prospectus and a few others. They are also privy to advance sabermetric metrics which do a much better job of measuring facets of the game (like defense) than anything available to the public.

Seems like there are some curious omissions, like G. Beckham and B. Revere, and a very curious inclusion in Betances. There are at least several others I have in my top 50 that arent on this list.

Who were the 8 guys above Arrieta that didnt make it?

am i missing something with carlos carrasco or is he really barely a top 40 prospect. he is philly's top prospect for sure i know he didn't have outstanding stats in AA but his K's were solid, but when he was sent to AAA Lehigh Valley he blew up. a 1.7ish ERA with a better than 1:1 K/9 ratio. also he is pitching great in winter ball with a 2.11 ERA. am i missing something because his stats tell me he should be top 15 at the least. also whats the ETA on jason heyward to the majors. i know everyone loves him because he had great numbers last year but he's only in A+ ball...can't see him up in the bigs until '10, plus he is only going to be 20 years old this year.

No love for Gordon Beckham in the top 50? A power MI who is relatively close (compared to Tim Beckham). I would think he would rank in the top 50.
