AL only, 5x5 roto, standard $260 salary cap, 8 keepers, draft/auction
Here is my list of potential keepers and their salary levels:
Bedard $9 (I must keep him by league rule because I extended his contract before last season) Rios $13 (also a must keep by league rule) Teixeira $31 Butler $10 Callaspo $10 Ballentien $10 Nelson Cruz $10 Dye $23 Quentin $6 (a definite keeper at that salary) Beckett $19 Blackburn $10 Harrison $1 Edwin Jackson $1 Kazmir $23
I always look for salary value with my keepers. If I make no deals, my keeper list would probably be Rios, Bedard, Quentin, Teixeira, Butler, Cruz, Harrison, and Jackson. I am only luke warm on Teixeira because I think that $31 is in the ballpark of what he will bring at the auction.
Closers are important in this league. I had Putz at a very friendly salary, but he is now lost to the NL.
The following deal has been proposed to me:
To the other guy: Teixeira and Harrison To me: Chris Ray $5, Arredondo $1, Hughes $14, and Sonnanstine $9
I don't think that Hughes is a keeper at $14 and I don't think that Sonnanstine represents a better value at $9 than Harrison at $1. Ray and Arredondo are two potential closers, but both have question marks going into the season. If I was 100% certain that Arredondo had the job in Anaheim, I would pull the trigger now.
I am conflicted. Thoughts?
(I know that some of the guys mentioned here don't sound like much, but this league uses virtually every available position player, starter, and closer in the AL, so you have to do a lot of bottom feeding. Setup guys even get selected at the draft/auction just for their WHIP/ERA help. I generally like to enter the draft/auction with at least $200 available.)
I would keep Tex. You want to make sure that you have a 1st round stud at a reasonable price. I think Tex could actually go for a few bucks more in an AL only league. These are the 8 I would keep:
Bedard $9 (I must keep him by league rule because I extended his contract before last season) Rios $13 (also a must keep by league rule) Teixeira $31 Nelson Cruz $10 Quentin $6 (a definite keeper at that salary) Beckett $19 Edwin Jackson $1 Butler $10
i'd also hold onto teix. what he is worth is pretty dependent on your specific draft, but i think $31 is a pretty good price for him.

i guess those would be my 8, though i'm not a huge fan of dye and beckett's cost.
Thanks for the help, everyone. It looks like everyone is saying to keep Tex. I may need to reconsider my position.
Since everyone thinks that Tex is a no brainer at $31, then I might need to also mention this. I've got a couple of other guys on my roster that I didn't mention in my original post because I thought their salary was cost prohibitive. I've got Carl Crawford at $38 amd Miguel Cabrera at $36. Should I also be giving these guys some consideration?

I think Crawford is too high no matter what. Cabrera at $36 is "possible" depending on what you think your draft inflation will be, and if you want him.
I would definitely keep both Tex and Cabrera. Those are likely two of the four best offensive players in the AL at what I would consider to be reasonable (if not exceptional) prices. I would keep the following:
Tex $31 Cabrera $36 Quentin $6 Bedard $9 Rios $13 Beckett $19 Edwin Jackson $1 Harrison $1
Total Keepers: $116
This team will be absolutely set on offense, with the exception of stolen bases, which can most likely be found relatively cheap. Also, if Bedard is healthy you will have two top of the rotation starters to anchor around. You can then build the rest of your staff around high-upside middle relievers who are 'next-in-line' closer types, like Zumaya, Jensen Lewis, Balfour, etc.
