hey guys i asked something similar in the minor league thread but this is different now. I'm in an 18 team dynasty h2h and my team isn't ready to compete yet in my opinion. We still have to go through FA this offseason but there aren't a ton of game changers the biggest names Matt Holliday and Joe Nathan. Do i call up Jay Bruce and Clayton Kershaw to my major league team or keep them in my minors. If i call them up there clock starts and i have them for 5 years. If i leave them down for this year then i would call them up next year and it would be one more year i get to have them and i think my team will be more competitive. my roster is Salty Fielder Dewitt Edwin Encarncion Eric Aybar Carlos Lee Chris Duncan Franklin Guiterez Jeff Mathis Dallas McPherson
Francis, Ubaldo, Liriano, Snell, Gorzelanny, McCarthy, Chris Young and then a ton of great minors.
My team has potential but we are very hit or miss

I would agree with the above suggestions. As long as Kershaw is in the Dodgers plans this year, call them up now and start the clock. If both of those guys are going to become studs, Now would be the year when they really turn it on.
My initial reaction was actually to not call them up, but then I began to wonder some of the other players available in free agency. There may not be game changers, but a couple of pieces as well as these two call ups and your team could be competive. I'm also curious about your minor league pitching talent. I think your lineup could be formidable in an 18 team league with Bruce called up. I would also cut ties with Duncan do to his surgery and huge questions around whether he'll be able to do anything this year or ever again. Liriano, Young could be a nice one/two if both stay healthy and Ubaldo could be a solid 3 if he continues to build on last years success. Not enamored with the other guys, but if even one of them steps up your pitching could be competitive, and the addition of Kershaw could pay decent dividends. After more thought I'm leaning toward calling them up and giving this season a go, I'd definitely be able to give a more concrete solid answer though if you answer a couple questions:
1-How do you go about adding free agents, is it simply re-draft of those guys (you listed Holliday being avaiable and Nathan too, two guys who would be GREAT on your team)?
2- What other type of B-level guys are available, a few nice ones on your roster could help push you over the top?
3- After trading, how does the arbitration clock work? If a player is kept for 4 years on one team, and about to be free agents, does the clock reset when you acquire them, or simply keep running and you lose them at the end of the year?
I'd love to chime in again, and I'm sure I'm not the only one with these questions. Hoped what I've said thus far has helped. Good luck, and if you don't mind, a little help with mine please? viewtopic.php?t=364919
wow great post thanks a lot. to answer your questions for FA we send in blind bids to the league office and everyone has an equal chance however i have the most cash to spend in the offseason.
some other guys available- Cantu, Huff, Adam LarRoache, Mora, Furcal, Jeter, mike Young, Nady, abreu, damon, Ben Sheets Cliff Lee, Nolasco, Bedard, Penny, Jose Valverde
and finally with arbitration- if you acquire a guy the clock keeps running it doesn't matter. So i only have liriano and young and fielder and encarnicion for two more years each. Fielder i will likely make my franchise player which will allow me to lock him up for 4 more years so he will be a staple in my lineup for 6 years

I think I'd consider splitting the difference here. I think I call up Bruce, and leave down Kershaw. I think Kershaw will be special, but considering the Dodgers will handle him carefully, and he has some control issues to iron out, I'd leave him down and sign some pitching talent to help you immediately.
I definitely think you should put in a blind bid for Erik Bedard's services. I think people are going to be down on him after last year (as they should be, to some degree) and you may be able to get him for a decent value. I would definitely steer clear of Lee, someone will overpay after last year's success, don't be that person. I'd put in a fair bid on Nolasco. Like Lee, he had a career year, unlike Lee, I like his chances at repeating it better, and think he might come at a fair cost. Maybe put in a low ball blind bid on Sheets, not something you necessarily expect to get his services, but something where you'd be pleasantly surprised with having him.
Of the bats (not named Holliday) Furcal intrigues me the most. He certainly comes with a high risk, but I think he'd be worth putting in a healthy offer for. He has speed to burn, and could hit 15+ HR's if healthy. Certainly big contributions from the SS position. He's also young enough to contribute for the majority of the time you can keep him. Also, if you call up Bruce, you'd be in pretty solid power shape, so Furcal's speed would be a big addition to your squad.
Finally, I wouldn't argue with putting in a solid bid for Jose Valverde. I think someone will overbid for Nathan, and don't see Valverde being way behind him in value. There is certainly less risk around Nathan, but I think a slight gamble could save you a great deal of free agent dollars if you opt to add a solid arm to your bullpen.
With your free agent dollars, some of the talent available, and the players already in place I'd certainly call up Bruce, and maybe Kershaw, but I think I'd hold off one more year on Kershaw personally and just make sure you sign an arm. Good luck! Thanks for the help on mine, I have also updated some if you have anything more you'd like to add.
Bring them up right now! Those guys are going to have beastly seasons next year, no sense in letting them go to waste in the minors. 5 years is a long time to have them.
