Keeper Thread: Last chance to draft these young players?

Postby MrE » Fri Dec 26, 2008 7:06 pm

The idea behind this thread is to list the players that you think are about to break out and will be annual high picks in the future (i.e. draft them now before it is too late). Who are these players? Where should they be drafted?

Initial Players that come to my mind (with their perceived value):

Justin Upton (7-12th round range)
Chris Davis (not in the top 100)
Phil Hughes (92 mph FB or 95? Ace or #3 starter? not in the top 150)
Edison Volquez (is he a legit ace? Probably still draftable outside of the top 70)
Delmon Young (Bust or down year? Not in the top 100)
Ryan Zimmerman (Wrist injury held him back. Is he ready to elevate himself into David Wright territory? Not in the top 75)
Chris Young (Is he a .240 hitter or .265? Is he a 25 SB candidate or 15? Not in the top 75)
Stephen Drew (Appeared to break out this past year. Has he reached his potential/begun entering his prime? Borderline top 75)

I am sure there are many others. Feel free to comment. I personally am undecided on how high to target guys like Upton and Zimmerman.

I like Max Scherzer and Joey Votto. I could see Votto being a perennial .300/25hr/100rbi guy and Scherzer getting a k/inning and having an ERA under 4.00.

Cameron Maybin. If he starts he's guaranteed 50-60 steals.

I like Justin Upton, but I don't think he's worth drafting in 7-12 range. He had a terrible season after his first month's hot streak. Lots of reasons to doubt he's ready to be worth a pick that early at this point in his career. You're probably right that someone will reach though.

Not that 12 would be bad, but 7 would be. I'd say 12-15. Thoughts?

theres no doubt he will be a special player he showed that last year, but like I said I dont think it will be this year and not worth reaching for. I could be wrong but i would take him as a 4 OF with the potential to outproduce that. 12-15 would not be bad at all IMO

Id like to hear your reasons behind this...he's never even had 30 in a season

Upton's MDP in redraft leagues is presently 196.46, which is the 17th round for leagues with 12-teams. I could definitely see him being drafted around the 10th round in keeper/dynasty leagues.

these are two unsurprising names that I also have at the front of my mind. Where would you expect them to go in a new dynasty draft? i think Tulo goes prior to his MDP of 90.

Also, what about Clayton Kershaw in a dunasty draft?
