Thoughts on Scott Baker-Matt Kemp deal? WHIR

Postby PujolsJunkie » Sat Dec 20, 2008 3:34 pm

I'm really liking the way Baker is coming along, something in the mold of James Shields.

Anyway, I may be able to trade for Baker in my dynasty league in a deal for Matt Kemp. It's a H2H points league. Baker's contract is 1/4 of what Kemp's is, and I have Braun, Hart, Pence and Chris Young to man 3 OF slots if I deal Kemp. SPs on my roster are Johan, Beckett, Shields, Wainwright, Harang, Slowey, Maine, Parra, Buchholz and Morrow.

From a value standpoint, it's a good deal. Based on my OF/SP situations, what do you guys think? We start 3 OFs and i would be using one of my OFs at DH also. We start 5 SPs a week.

I understand why you like Baker. He is geting identified as threads on the board as someone to target as undervalued, but a straight up Baker for Kemp deal is not good for you.

Kemp looks like a .285-25HR-35SB-90 RBI type guy for years to come. Maybe even better than that.

I see Baker as a nice #3 SP with upside to #2 SP. Baker would need to a solid #2 SP with upside for me to trade Kemp straight up.

I would hold on to Kemp, and look for a better deal.

kemp is a lot more valuable than baker at this point imo. i'd need a better pitcher back in return to make a deal, even if baker's contract is only 1/4th kemps.

I agree with the rest. Kemp has way more value than Baker. You should be able to get a much better pitcher for him straightup. Aim more for someone like Kazmir, Volquez, Zambrano, Dice-K.

I am not sure why you would want to do this. You are pretty full at SP and Kemp has a lot of promise coming into next season. If you want Baker, you should be able to get him a lot cheaper than Kemp. I understand the price difference but by the end of next season Kemp's price tag will probably have him undervalued.

I appreciate the responses guys. Thank you for the reinforcement - my post was meant to sound like I was swaying toward a yes on such a deal, when in reality I was hoping to see these responses :)

I love Kemp.
