Need help with final keepers/trade needs

Postby ajr4023 » Sat Dec 13, 2008 4:00 pm

Hello all. Just seeking some last advice before the offseaon feezes in a few weeks. I've posted this team a few months back, and after lots of cuts and trades, I'm trying to further improve still. I play in a 20 team standard 5X5 league where we keep 12 players along with 5 minors (under 300 abs or 15 pitching apperences. We play 9 pitchers and 13 hitters (C-1B-2B-3B-SS-3 OF-5 U) and 12 bench spots. We then redraft 18 rounds. I'm still quite uncertain on what players should be cut, who may have some trade value left and where my greatest weaknesses are. My roster is as followed. A star denotes minor eligibility.

1B-L.Berkman
1B-A.Villalona***
1B-C.Marrero***
3B-M.Mora
SS-K.Greene
3B/SS-B.Wood***
OF-M.Ramirez
OF-C.Quenton
OF-J.Pierre
OF-M.LaPorta***
OF-W.Taveras
OF-R.Church
OF-J.Heyward***
P-J.Lester
P-B.Morrow
P-Olv.Perez
P-D.Lowe
P-F.Cordero
P-H.Bell
P-J.Francis
P-D.Purcey***
P-B.Cecil***
P-J.Meloan***

Any advice on I should be focused on in a trade? Can this team compete as is (14th last year) Hopefully I can help some of you guys in your posts as well. Thanks

Berkman
K.Greene
Manny
Quentin
Pierre
Taveras
Lester
Morrow
Oliv.Perez
Lowe
F.Cordero
Bell

Heyward
Laporta
C.Wood
Villalona
Marrero

Your team is OK. You have power and speed for your hitting, but your counting stats may not be so high depending on the playing times of Pierre and Taveras (who just got non-tendered but I chose him anyway). Your pitching is off to a good start for a 20 team league with 4 solid starters (assuming that's what Morrow does in spite of Putz trade) and 2 closers. A good draft and some shrewd inseason moves should help you contend. ;-D

I like what San D said above as well. I might try and swing a package deal with some of your OF (especially the non power speedy guys) along with either Mora or a SP for either a 2B or 3B?

please help with mine:

these 8 are surefire keepers, after them it starts to get interesting. i'd keep greene on the hope that a move to a better line-up and a better ballpark help him bounce back from last year, also SS will be pretty ridiculously shallow in a 20 team league. oliver perez is a bit of a gamble but worth keeping. ryan church could put up pretty good numbers if he stays healthy and starts all year in the mets line-up. last decision comes down to pierre or taveras... very similar players, both with huge question marks on playing time... flip a coin and choose one, though i wouldn't be too happy about having to keep either.

SS-K.Greene
OF-R.Church

seem like obvious choices for 4 of your minor league keepers, but i don't really know enough about the other 4 to say who should get the last spot.

you have a good amount of power and a relatively solid start to a pitching staff for a 20 team league. if taveras or pierre end up with a starting gig, they'll keep you competitive in steals (though won't supply much else). with a solid draft i think this team can contend.
