thats what manager said yesterday he has planned for Cruz's 2009, boy I want to believe and keep him instead of some safer plays. Has he really turned the corner and figured out big league pitching? He could be 1 of those guys that really give your fantasy roster a huge boost. In 1 league I can have V Wells for 1 year or Cruz for many. In another its Cruz or C Pena. I've got decent keeper rosters in both & don't need to do something stupid, but it wouldn't be the first time I gambled on a lesser name. He's 28 hit a combined 44 HR 27 sb's a good avg and didn't K much. geez, here I go again. somebody talk some sense into me!
I try to minimize risk with my keepers, but you owe it to yourself to take a risk in one of your leagues here or you will go crazy. Pick Cruz for many years over Wells for one. It may or may not pan out, but Vernon Wells isn't exactly Babe Ruth and is worth the risk for your sanity.
yea I've never been too big on Wells. picked him up in a trade last year so I've no great affinity for him. Really if Cruz doesn't totally fall apart I'm not too sure he'll give me alot different power #'s than Pena either. I keep thinking back to the 1 year I got enamored with Zach Duke after his 8-2 1.82 ERA rookie season and retained his services for the following season . I'd hate to make that kind of mistake again.

Nelson Cruz strikes me as a slow developer. I know he was older than most of the competition, but .342/.429/.695 with 37HR 24SB 56BB 87K in only 383 AAA abs is awesome.
Then in the majors, his success carried over and he hit .330/.421/.609 7HR 17BB 28K. He will be 28 next year, so still in his prime. If he does indeed hit behind Hamilton, I see him as a great late round value next season.
.275 28HR 10SB with a good number of runs and RBIs, is something that I could see.
I don't think we can attribute Nelson Cruz season to just a hot streak, I really think that he took a step forward and something clicked. For a guy that is still hanging around in the late rounds, and can probably be picked up as a bench player, he is well worth the risk.
As for your specific case, I think I would be boring and stick with Wells. Not because I like Vernon all that much, but because I think you will be able to get Nelson back in the draft.
