Trade Question WHIR

Postby sdieckhaus » Tue Dec 09, 2008 4:55 pm

I am in a 15-team 5x5 roto keeper league. We get to keep three players (my projected keepers right now are Teixeira, Utley, and B.J. Upton). We also get to designate three restricted free-agents (RFAs); mine right now are probably Edinson Volquez, Troy Tulowitzki, and Derrek Lee. In addition to these, we have a unique minor league system. Basically, if we draft a player in a minor league draft, and he becomes major league eligible, we get to keep that player for the eligible season and two subsequent seasons without designating as a keeper. Right now, I have Justin Upton and Jacoby Ellsbury that fit this mold. Now for my question:

I currently have an offer to trade Chase Utley (both parties know of his surgery) and Travis Snider (who is on my minor league roster) for Ryan Howard and Matt Kemp. Is this trade worth it?

MAJOR LEAGUE ROSTER

C - Ivan Rodriguez (NYY)
1B - Mark Teixeira (ANA)
2B - Chase Utley (PHI)
SS - Troy Tulowitzski (COL)
3B - Aubrey Huff (BAL)
MI - B.J. Upton (TAM)
CI - Derrek Lee (CHC)
OF - Garret Anderson (ANA)
OF - Justin Upton (ARI)
OF - Jacoby Ellsbury (BOS)
OF - Johnny Damon (NYY)
U - Jeff Francoeur (ATL)
SP - Edinson Volquez (CIN)
SP - Mike Mussina (NYY)
RP - Brian Fuentes (COL)
RP - Kerry Wood (CHC)
P - Joel Hanrahan (WAS)
P - Luis Ayala (NYM)
P - Derek Lowe (LAD)
P - Josh Johnson (FLA)
B - Brett Myers (PHI)
B - Phil Hughes (NYY)
B - Greg Maddux (LAD)
B - Felipe Lopez (STL)
B - Mike Cameron (MIL)
B - Omar Infante (ATL)

MINOR LEAGUE ROSTER

1 - Travis Snider - OF (TOR)
2 - Angel Villalona - 3B (SFG)
3 - Nick Adenhart - SP (ANA)

The question is: do I do the trade? If so, is Kemp my third keeper or B.J. Upton? Who are my RFAs? What do I do with the Tex, Howard, D. Lee 1B jam (I know that I keep Tex and Howard, but do I still designate D. Lee an RFA to use as a UTIL player)? The help is greatly appreciated, and I need it soon! I will help in return!

I like the idea of trading Utley because of his surgery, but I don't like this deal for you. When you consider that you're really trading Utley/Upton/Snider for Howard/Kemp, I think you're losing substantially.

Maybe I'm reading a little too much into the playoff performance, but I like Upton quite a bit more than Kemp. I think his power numbers were depressed this year because of injury and I would expect a much better year in '09.

If you're going to deal Utley/Snider (who I also like quite a bit), I would target one high end star player, rather than a package. You have enough positional flexibility that it doesn't even matter what position your target plays.

I agree with the above. Also, I don't know how your RFA system works, but I would rather have Jacoby Ellsbury than Derrek Lee.

I would do the deal. Giving Utley up is crazy, but you're your power is ridiculous with Tex and Howard. Gotta go with BJ has a keeper. His power will come back with his shoulder healthy and the SB's aren't goin anywhere. I think Kemp is only getting better too. Lee is expendable. So overall my 3 keepers for you would be Tex/Howard/BJ Upton with RFA Kemp/Volquez/Tulo and Minor leaguer Ellsbury. Gives you great balance with power and speed and guys. Not sure if you can keep J.Upton as a RFA because of your minor league scenario, but I would think about him over Tulo if there are going to be other options at SS available.

I wouldn't do this trade if I were you. Kemp is a throw-in - you need to keep Upton over him anyways. So basically it's Utley/Snider for Howard. Utley for Howard straight up might be something to consider, but adding an elite prospect like Snider is too much...

I would do the deal. Snider is a great prospect, but if you are only able to keep three players from year to year, he won't be kept after his rookie season anyway.

Tex, Howard, and Upton as your keepers. RFA Kemp, Tulo. I'm not a huge fan of Volquez, but if you want you can RFA him too.
