I am thinking of making an offer for Arod and want to see what you think would be a good offer to get him.We play in a 5x5 mixed keeper. Players can be kept a total of four years. I am going to have either the first, second or third pick in this years draft.I will also have the second pick in each of the next nine rounds. The draft is loaded.The top three picks will be Jose Reyes, Pujlos or Ultley. Why don't you ask him whats its going to take to get Arod and go from there, I think you'll find him more receptive than if you toss out less than what he'd expect.
I should add that because I have both Teixeira and Cabrera at first base that was my thinking of trading for Arod. Miggy only qualifes at first in my league (20 games ). Plus if I get thefirst pick chances are good I'll go with Albert.I figure to get Arod its going to cost me either Miggy or Tex .But if Tex signs in Boston he could have huge year.Both Tex and Aro have two years left. Miggy has three.

if you offer him a deal he'll accept, it will be too much if you offer him a deal thats too little, you'll piss him off if you ask him what it would take, you enter into negotiations

That said, his first offer will almost certainly be more than you're willing to pay. I think a reasonable counter would be Tex + Furcal. You can talk up the great offensive environment for Tex, whether he signs in BOS or NY, the fact that Tex will be in his prime years, the amazing year Furcal had before he got hurt, and the much-needed speed Furcal would give him. I'd leave out the good possibility that Furcal signs with Oakland.
EDIT: Oakland just pulled their offer to Furcal - still think I'd be very comfortable with the above deal.
I wrote him a note saying I had interest in Arod and to look my team over if he was willing to make a trade. I'm not going to make an offer.The A's did pull their offer but they are still willing to sign him for three years and not four. I wish he was going to a hitter friendly park.

The best bet is to start the talks. Offer him something but also let ask him to send a counter offer you way if he doesn't like yours. I don't know how you get the idea that the first person who offers will lose a trade. It is all a matter of getting the best trade for you. If you don't like it don't do it. The only time you lose a trade, when you are dead set on getting a certain player, in which case you might overpay. If you don't like the deal, walk away and try something else for somebody else.

Dude, I negotiate $100,000 plus deals for a living everyday, the point was that if you make a first offer that is accepted as written, you probably paid too much. Conversely if you make a first offer that is too low, trying to make the best deal for you, you will piss off your trade partner and again have to pay too much to make the deal if you can make it at all. The way to negotiate a deal that works for both parties is to ask what it would take to make a deal. He'll ask for too much, but knowing this you won't get pissed and will make a counter offer to him etc., thus entering into negotiations. Now if he's an idiot go ahead and offer him what would be a steal for you, but if he's not - enter into negotiations.

People don't just offer away their best player after being sent an email asking them to do so. You must make an offer because while it would be nice if they would offer first, why should they? If you want ARod, you got to make the first move, preferably something reasonable and not low balling because when you're dealing with a superstar, an insulting offer can shut down negotiations immediately.
I'd expect to lose MCab but that's okay, you have Tex at first base anyway and he'll obviously still perform well for the next two years. The problem is the major gap between your current top 3 guys and everyone else. I'd guess Jay Bruce is probably the most intriguing option to offer with MCab that could get it done.
I threw this offer out to him but not in a formal proposal.I offered him M.Cabrera,Jo. Santana ,Furcal and my 12th round pick for Arod and his 1round pick . His pick would be the # 8 pick in the draft. I will have either the 1-2-3 overall pick in the first round and the second pick in each of the next rounds until round 10. ARod can be kept for two years. I had to include a pick because we all have to have a total of 16 picks . Its a 9 player keeper 5x5 standard scoring
