Trouble Deciding on Keepers

Postby C2ThaLo88 » Fri Dec 05, 2008 12:14 pm

First post here, hope it's not the last...

I'm thinking of keeping: Utley, Atkins, Beltran, Rios, Haren, K-Rod. However, Bruce and Votto are both solid picks, more-so Bruce I would imagine. I will have roughly the 6th pick in the draft, so should I hope that maybe Bruce (or even someone better) would still be available? Or is Bruce too much talent to let go? My pitching was dismal all last year with the exception of my closers (in particular K-Rod and Wood), so I'm unsure if I should sacrifice Haren or K-Rod for better hitting.

12 Teams - 6 Keepers
Head to Head
R, HR, RBI, SB, BB, K, TB, AVG, IP, W, L, CG, SHO, SV, K, ERA, WHIP

C-Victor Martinez
1B-Garret Atkins
2B-Chase Utley
3B-Adrian Beltre
SS-J.J. Hardy
OF-Carlos Beltran
OF-Corey Hart
OF-Alex Rios
Util-Joey Votto
BN-Stephen Drew
BN-Lastings Milledge
BN-Chris Snyder
BN-Chris Iannetta
BN-Jay Bruce

Welcome to the Cafe, C2ThaLo88. ;-D

I would keep

Utley
Beltran
Rios
Hart
Atkins
Haren

You should be taking Corey Hart before Jay Bruce and Joey Votto pretty easily for 09. Jay Bruce has star potential, but he'll need a couple of more years, I think, to start getting the numbers to justify keeping him in a 12 team, 6 keepers league. I'd probably even take Votto over Bruce for 09 only.

K-Rod has the saves record and all, but I think he's a bit of a risk pick for 09 because he'll be taken very early. I think his wildness will eventually catch up to him. I'd throw him back in the draft and let someone else take him in the first round.

2B-Chase Utley
OF-Carlos Beltran
OF-Jay Bruce
OF-Alex Rios
SS-Stephen Drew
SP-Dan Haren

Hart is a tough cut, but I like Bruce even more. The guy is primed to hit 25+ with a handful of SB thrown in, and he has heaps of upside still. Hart is a 20/20 guy, but I would go with the upside of Bruce who on name alone will probably bring you back more in a trade if you need to deal for depth elsewhere.

In a 12 team league, I think you should keep KRod. Yes he had the saves record last year and a lot of people will either over-value him or under-value him. Bottom line is that he is one of the best closers in the game. He has never had a down year since he took over as the closer. He has never been under 40 saves and usually is over 90K's (outside of last year). Other than Krod I would take:

Rios
Utley
Beltran
Haren
Bruce - this is the only ? but he has a lot of upside and I would take the risk. With so many keepers and a 12 team league he has the potential to be a top 10 OF in the very near future.

Utley
Beltran
Rios
Hart
Atkins
Haren

I agree with KC. KRod's value is diminished as well with so many cat's in H2H.

Assuming you can keep players forever, I'd take Utley, Beltran, Votto, Hart, Bruce, and Haren.

Some thoughts:

1) K-Rod: I agree with others that closers' value is diluted in this league.
2) Atkins/Votto: Votto was better than Atkins last year, is significantly younger, and if/when Atkins is traded out of Colorado, his value (both perceived and actual) will plummet.
3) Bruce/Rios: Toughest call for me. I think Rios is probably .290/100/18/85/5 - a lot of certainty he hits that projection, but I don't see a huge upside. Bruce offers upside on pretty much all counting stats, but is probably significantly lower on avg. and K's. Unlike Rios, he's got first round potential, and in a league with only six keepers, that's critical.

Agreed 100%. There's a good balance of upside and predicted dominance, plus you're covered completely at two of the three shallowest positions, as well as the entire OF.

Thanks so much for the input. Yes we can keep them forever, unless we decide to do a complete redraft (which wouldn't be for at least 3 years from now).

Utley, Beltran, and Haren are for sure going to be kept. After some of your comments I'm leaning away from Atkins and K-rod. So my final 3 slots will be between Hart, Votto, Rios, and Bruce. Votto ended the season really well, would that be a sign that he'll continue that kind of output for this season? Same for Hart who did not end so well, would that be any indication that he'll struggle this season?

A deal to trade K-Rod for B. Webb is in the works. Since I'm not planning on keeping K-Rod it would be wise to deal him for a keeper SP and help give a good base to my pitching staff right? Can Webb be expected to produce similar numbers like he has the past few years?
