Thanksgiving! Time to get serious about my keepers. 16 team mixed league with 10 keepers 6x6 (+ OPS on the offense and +Holds on pitching). I've won three of the last 6 years. Finished 4th this year with a team that ended up a little short on offense.
C: Martin 1B: Pujols 2b: Kelly Johnson ss: Alexei Ramirez 3B: Wright OF: Burrell, McLouth, Hart Others: Butler, Snider, Ian Stewart, Shin Soo Choo Pitchers: Halladay, JDuch, Maine, Josh Johnson, Harang, Sean Marshall, Wakefield, Capps, BWilson, and other dreck
Given the pitching ?, I may even go with 8 or 9 hitters. Here's my thoughts:
Definite: Martin, Pujols, Wright, McLouth, Hart, Halladay Bubble: KJ: really struggled for much of last year before torrid September. Lefty who tends to sit versus lefties and when slumping. Braves offense counts against him Ramirez: Seemed to have it all together last year. Flash in the pan, or real deal about to explode? Like the offense he's on. Would like to see Sox move him up in order for '09 Choo: Very nice showing. Can he repeat for a full season? Will he start? Platoon? Stewart: Like the season, but maybe a stretch for a keeper. Burrell: Like the dingers and OPS in this league. Could do without the hit to average. Butler versus Snider: Two prospects I really like and am willing to carry. KC gets Jacobs and Crisp...does that mean Butler shares the DH with Gordon? If so, then Butler's a short end of a platoon. Looks like Snider may start...will he hit for high enough average to hold it.
So, if you had to add 2-3 hitters from that list, who and why?

C: Martin 1B: Pujols 2b: Kelly Johnson ss: Alexei Ramirez 3B: Wright OF: Burrell , McLouth , Hart Others: Butler , Snider , Ian Stewart, Shin Soo Choo Pitchers: Halladay , JDuch, Maine, Josh Johnson , Harang, Sean Marshall, Wakefield, Capps, BWilson, and other dreck
Thats who i'd go with, J Johnson might sound crazy, but i'd give him a chance
Martin Pujols Alexei Wright Burrell McLouth Hart Halladay J. Johnson
The 10th is kind of a toss-up, I don't really have a strong feeling towards any of the remaining guys. I would defintely keep those 9 listed however. Josh Johnson is a must keep IMO.
Stronger consensus on Josh Johnson than I thought. Any particular reason why you guys favor him over jDuch, Maine, Harang, or Wandy? More consensus on Ramirez than I expected, too.
No one likes Choo? His Marcel prediction caught my eye. Choo versus Snider/Butler seems to me a win now versus build for future while trying to win. Choo does not have the ceiling of the other two, but may be a better 2009 option. Might need to see how roles shake out in the spring. So far 2 for Butler versus 1 for Snider
You all seem to favor a second pitcher over going with 9 hitters and Halladay. I may have to look at my opponents keeper lists and see who is likely to be available in round 11 before I make that decision.
Thanks, guys. Any additional thoughts are most appreciated!

choo has military time to serve in 2010 - so snider or butler is the better choice due to their long-term value
alexei is an extremely easy choice........he should be on your "definite" list
i'd be tempted to go with butler and snider, but depends how many starting pitchers your competition is keeping - you might not have much to pick through.........if you were to chuck one back i'd go with the majority and keep josh johnson (although i'd be looking to upgrade via the trade route)
might also want to think about capps if your competition is sucking up a lot of closers in keepers - again, might not be much left there once you start drafting
Almost made Alexei a definite, but then the discussion in leftovers made me back off. Everyone seems to like Pat the Bat, too. Does losing Utley hurt him or help him?

Martin Pujols Wright McLouth Halladay Hart Ramirez He's eligible at 2B, SS, and OF Gives you flexibility in the draft and in the season. He's a definate in my opinion. Josh Johnson I think he'll be good in 2009. He has good stuff and has a mid 90's fastball. Playing on an improving team, and pitching his home games in a pitchers park. Harang I think he just had an off year. I think he'll rebound. He's already had a couple real good seasons. Those would be my definate keepers. Burrell It would be easier to pick him if it was known where he'll play. But I think he's still a keeper . I do like Choo and Stewart, but They are not a lock to have a starting job. I don't think you can keep them over Burrell.
As far as your batting average concerns with Burrell, I don't think you have to worry. You have 2 real good average guys who could hit . 325 ( Pujols and Wright ) And The other batter keepers should all be decent in that category.
I think you have 7 definite keepers and it might be worth considering taking extra early draft picks if possible.
Pujols Wright Halladay Mclouth Martin Alexei Ramirez - possible 20/20 with multiple positions in a 16 team league is very valuable Hart
Josh Johnson Kelly Johnson Pat Burrell - I don't like him much and he's likely not playing in a bandbox
non-keepers, but close Aaron Harang - I think he's damaged, but he could bounceback John Maine Ian Stewart Travis Snider - he's not a lock for playing time, but a very good prospect
