Keeper planning question

Postby Paws » Wed Nov 26, 2008 5:05 pm

I am in a 12 team H2H keeper league. My team did awful last year. I was in last plae before playoff. Moved up to 8th by the end got lucky and won my first two consilation games. Our leage allow 4 to 7 keepers. If you keep last then seven than you get to draft in supplimental rounds first. This is done in a snake draft. When the regular draft start the snake draft continues with everyone drafting. I hve the first pick in the draft based on the fact that I finished last at the end of the regular season. However since the snake draft just continues in our league at th begining of the regular draft I could end up drafting last in the first round of the regular draft depending on how many supplimental draft rounds because of the snake draft. If there is an odd number of round then I draft last.

Now here is my question should I only keep 4 to insure I get the first pick overall?

My Team:
Batters
C - Kenji Johjima (Sea - C)
1B - James Loney (LAD - 1B)
2B - Placido Polanco (Det - 2B)
3B - David Wright (NYM - 3B)
SS - Orlando Cabrera (CWS - SS)
LF - Josh Willingham (Fla - LF)
CF - Torii Hunter (LAA - CF)
RF - Magglio Ordonez (Det - RF)
OF - Ken Griffey Jr. (CWS - CF,RF)
Util - Kevin Youkilis (Bos - 1B,3B)
BN - Yuniesky Betancourt (Sea - SS)
BN - Jeff Kent (LAD - 2B)
BN - Khalil Greene (SD - SS)
DL - Eric Byrnes (Ari - LF,CF,RF) DL

Pitchers
SP - Joe Saunders (LAA - SP)
SP - Mark Buehrle (CWS - SP)
SP - Matt Garza (TB - SP)
RP - Mariano Rivera (NYY - RP)
RP - Francisco Cordero (Cin - RP)
RP - Heath Bell (SD - RP)
P - Fernando Rodney (Det - RP)
P - Joba Chamberlain (NYY - SP,RP)
P - Arthur Rhodes (Fla - RP)
BN - Jon Garland (LAA - SP)
BN - Zack Greinke (KC - SP,RP)
BN - George Sherrill (Bal - RP)

I plan on keeping Wright,Ordonez,Youkilis, and Rivera. Does this sound like a good plan?

Yes keep 4. Your next keepers would seem to be Loney, Hunter, Joba, Garza, and Cordero. I would prefer to take my chances in the draft especially since you can get those guys back with your supplemental picks in the worst case. But you have to figure that there are a couple of stacked teams some pretty good players.

Thanks for the quick response. I figure I could get some better players because there at max could only be 84 players kept. All the players I hae left are below the top 84 according to CBSsportsline. With Chamberlain being next at 91. I know I shouldn't just use there ranking as anything but a guide.

I was also offered a trade that I am looking for suggestions:

Keep 4, pass on the Wright deal too. Maybe you could trade Wright, Mags & Rivera after the draft for longer-term keepers. I'd focus on youth in the draft as your keepers will probably be weaker than most of the league.Your best play might be to try to be good in 2010, rebuilding in keepers takes time

Too bad you can't keep just 2 or 3. In any event, I wouldn't necessarily keep Rivera as my 4th. I think it's unlikely you'll WIN this league in 09 either and you should weigh this keep decsion in that light. IMO this is an important offseason in that you'll acquire some of the top teams surplus talent with your extra picks and could set yourself to be a major longterm championship contender by 2010. In that light I'd opt to keep someone like Joba over Rivera.

I am planning on keeping just four. The Wright trade has been up to include either Votto or Zambrano. If Votto was add this would give me two younger players. I will lose wright at the end of this year.

I'd take a chance and keep Joba Chamberlain he has a lot of upside out of your starters. I wouldn't keep a closer with such few options unless it was Krod.
