I'm looking at which players to extend contracts for in 2009. The ones I'm not 100% sold on are Kelly Johnson, Xavier Nady, Shane Victorino, and Joel Zumaya. I'm also a bit nervous about how much Chipper Jones has left. I'd love to hear some feedback from some folks at the Cafe on these guys. Thanks.

It's a very strange auction league in that it's not a straight money system. I used to try to explain the rules a bit but notice it seems to confuse things more than it helps. So overall, yeah it's basically an auction league where I'm trying to figure out of I should just extend these contracts or let them go to free agency and hope I can resign them (or get something better).

Ok. The only guy I really like out of the group is Shane Victorino and probably have him at a decent price tag. I'd look to extend his contract. Chipper Jones will put up the numbers as long as he's playing, but he won't play the whole season. He's probably signed to a expensive contract and his value is going down for 09 because he's one year older. I'm not crazy about Kelly Johnson or Xavier Nady. Unless they have real cheap contracts, I'd dump them. Joel Zumaya doesn't have much value unless he takes over the closer role, so unless you can have him for peanuts, I'd dump him too.
The only definitive word of advice I can give you is to cut ties with Zumaya; his injury prone nature is only emboldened by the fact that he needs to throw hard to be effective. I wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole.
For a point of reference, I'm keeping Victorino at $23 and Johnson at $17 in a 12 team NL only 5x5 Ultra league. I would be keeping Nady at $18 in a 13 team NL only 4x4 Ultra league but I lost him to the AL. You should be able to get Zumaya back at a smaller price if you release him.
I'd rank them Victorino, Chipper, Kelly. Victorino is a good source of speed, Chipper is a good 3B, but you can't count on him to stay healthy. Kelly I expect to be a serviceable 2B for this next year, and he has the potential to improve upon last seasons numbers.
