Another Dynasty Trade - WHIR like always

Postby monty797 » Tue Nov 25, 2008 11:56 pm

So I've gotten another offer, this one for Joey Votto who is my starting 1B. This is for a 24 team dynasty league.

I put him on the block looking for Sp help as I'm a bit short there and can use some depth.

I got offered the following for Votto.

John Lannon
Pablo Sandoval
Gorkys Hernandez

Now it does give me a good young cheap starter in Lannan, a big upside bat in Sandoval and a potential strong OF prospect in Hernandez.

Now I like Votto and his production is really strong, but I'm fairly torn on him, I see him being able to grow to a 30/100 type guy or possibly staying where he is.

Lannan would be replacing Jason Marquis as my 5th starter, and marquis would be going to my bench.

So what do you think, is this worth taking?

I'm not crazy about the trade. I think you can get more for Votto, a lot more.

John Lannan isn't very good and he plays for a bad team. Pablo Sandoval is fine, but he isn't a top prospect, at least not as high in the rankings as Votto was a few years ago. Gorkys has a lot of speed, but he doesn't have much pop and that doesn't sound all that great for a fantasy outfielder.

I'd say thanks, but no thanks.

Yeah I thought I could possibly get more as well, yet nothing really has come by that is close to this. With 24 teams, a full lineup + DH, 5sp's and 2RP's it makes it hard to find alot of depth. Most owners aren't willing to empty their systems for a single player no matter who it is. This is a points league as well, so you'd figure that Pablo and Lannan will generate a good bit more than Votto.

Still just on the fence on this, mainly its Sandoval who I like the most here.

I think that if you are not getting the value you want for one of your players, then you shouldn't force a trade and settle for less. Joey Votto is a fine young player, he hasn't even reached his peak yet. Also, the season is still a few months away and you have time to wait for the right offer.

If that was the best offer you got, I would recommend you to keep Votto and wait for something better. 08 was Votto's first full year in the majors and the kid did great. He's only 25 and plays on a hitter friendly park. I'd be pretty excited about Votto if I had Votto in a dynasty league.

I don't like this trade even in a really deep league. Your primary goal in this trade was to get a SP and you are getting a very mediocre one at best. And I'm not exactly sold on Sandoval or Gorkys. I'm also a Votto fan and he has to have a ton of value in a dynasty like this.

This was my initial response: I'm pretty high on Sandoval, and I think this trade is almost even, but the bottom line is that it doesn't address your needs. Lannan probably isn't the guy you want to slot into your rotation after moving out Votto. This also raises the classic "best player in the deal" problem.

Now that I'm thinking about it as a points league though, that may change things. Can you post the points Votto, Sandoval, and Lannan posted in your league last year?

I agree with most of what you guys have said.

I reproposed a trade that I think is probably much better. He's accepted, in email, just need to propose and get it accepted. I think this is MUCH better.

I get

Shields
Lannan
Sandoval

I give

Votto

Nice trade if it's J.Shields from Tampa. If it's S.Shields, then I'm not nuts about it.
