5th pick in dynasty draft, who to take?

Postby jimpage » Fri Nov 21, 2008 10:11 am

this is a 16 team hth dynasty, offensive cats are r, h, rbi, sb, avg, ops...ive never played in a league without hr so im trying to adjust properly...im pretty set on my top 4: hanley, pujols, wright, reyes...assuming these 4 are gone is arod #5 or can anyone make an arguement for someone else?...maybe holliday because he'll rack up hits and not be punished for less hr in oakland?...thanks in advance whir!

With the offensive Categories that your league is counting, I might consider going out on a limb and selecting a guy like Ichiro as the #5 pick.

He will get all categories except RBI....what more can you ask for. I know its hard to think of taking a guy like Ichiro as the #5 overall pick, but you gotta take all things into account. Just my 2 cents.

OPS basically replaces HR. I don't think that it is any different. However, with H and AVG as categories, guys who get a lot of H will be much more valuable in this setting. I would definitely target players who can get 200 H and hit for a high AVG in your case. I wouldn't reach for a guy like Ichiro but guys like Arod, Holliday, MCab, Hamilton, Berkman, Teixeira, etc should all fit that category.

If those are the four gone, I am personally going Cabrera with a lot of confidence. Steals are something you are going to have to draft year-to-year, so I'd be looking for a young player who will contribute at a high level in the other categories. Cabrera should be a top-5 hitter for the next ten years. I'd go with him.

Seconding the M. Cab. pick. Combination of youth and dominant hitting ability are tough to argue with.

I would concentrate mainly on OPS. In the first round, you want to draft a player capable of an OPS well over .900 and/or at 1.000. When you count hits, I'd look at Pujols, A-Rod, or M-Cab. Hanley is a viable top 5 pick too but with his batting average normalizing, I'd say, his OPS is likely to be in the low .900's.

I would take whoever falls of Pujols, ARod or MCab.

I assume the top 4 would be Hanley, Pujols, Wright, Arod, which would leave you with MCab, but you never know.

I have to say ARod is your best bet here. You pretty much know what you are going to get in ARod. Can't really say that with MCab.

Hard to go wrong with Arod at #5 if he falls that far.
