2nd rd. pick for Burnett

Postby APAP » Sat Nov 15, 2008 5:34 pm

I have two 2nd round rookie picks and was offered AJ Burnett for one of them. My team is awful...I just took it over for an owner who left in a 16 team league, and it's a Dynasty. I made a bunch of cuts to get myself back under the cap and am now looking for trades and the rookie draft to rebuild. What do you think of this deal?

I think I would do it. It is a touch decision because your team has a number of issues. I don't know who would be available with one of those picks but I think Burnett will have decent trade value next season which could land you better players that what you will get in that draft.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that. AJ right now is at 12 mil, which could be a bit too much for me with what I'm trying to do, but not too rediculous. Im actively trying to move Beltran with his high salary.

It would depend on who would be available with a 2nd round pick, but in a dynasty I doubt there would be much.

Even if you then use him in another deal to go more with your direction, I don't see how this deal can hurt.

it looks like you wanting to be thinking long term, not sure how much this really helps. I suppose you could turn AJ for something worthwhile later perhaps, still its not exactly what you want in a major rebuilding. your draft picks might be more useful than AJ by the time this rebuilding team is competing. A 2nd rnd draft pick with an already established minor league system would get you a guy taken in the top 25 of this years amateur draft? Or you could get a guy who can be a nice #2 SP, and deal him after he has a couple of good starts for something better. I mean either way is a gamble, because the minor leagues after the top 70 players or so has a lot of luck involved, and Burnett is injury prone. I think I would take the gamble, and deal Burnett after he builds up some value.

Yeah, I agree with the others, it depends on what kind of player you would be able to get with a 2nd Round pick. I would imagine, there wouldn't be anyone of much value, most of the top prospects should have already been selected. You are probably better off picking young international signings and gamble on those guys rather than taking college players who might not have as high upside.

I think I would make the trade for Burnett now and deal him in during the season. Burnett had a much better season than his ERA shows. If he goes to the NL, his value will likely go up because he won't have to face NYY and BOS anymore, he won't have the terrible Blue Jays offense behind him and he won't face DHs anymore. Because you are rebuilding, you likely won't be in contention for next year and you can trade Burnett during the season. It is very likely you will get more for Burnett during the season than in the offseason. Teams are more likely to give up 1st round picks and good prospects if they have a chance to win a championship.

I have two picks in the second, 2.07 and 2.11. I was planning to take Mike Stanton and Ross Detwiler with those picks, but Stanton just went. Detwiler is likely my first pick now, which is the pick I'd be trading.

I think the bigger question is how valuable is 12M to you? Do you have to dump someone else to bring him in? Are there FA's available to sign? If the other team really wants to dump him then I think you can probably get him for a lesser prospect. Try that first imo.
