Miller thinks the deal involves Yunel Escobar, Gorkys Hernandez, either Charlie Morton or Jo-Jo Reyes and one more pitcher, possibly Blaine Boyer or prospect Jeff Locke.
Get it done
That is a really craptastic offer. Yunel Escobar is pretty good, but there is no way he should be the centrepiece of the deal.
Peavy doesn't become a free agent for a long time (potentially 2013) so if that really is the deal I'd tell them to cram it.
I'm still hoping Towers plunders the Dodgers farm system so that I can have a good laugh, but I'm not holding my breath.

If that's the best deal the Padres can get the system is far worse than I thought. I can understand a player with an expiring contract not getting the world back in return, but when you can't get fair value back for an elite pitcher with years left on his contract there's a huge problem. San Diego has plenty of time to try to get a better deal and if it means waiting until July they should.

If this is the case then I'm hoping the Twins offer Alexi Casilla, Ben Revere, Glen Perkins and some other mediocre prospect for Peavy. Yunel is a nice player (and better than Casilla, that was the closest comparable player), but this is like trading spare parts for a slightly used BMW. I don't see how this helps the Padres next season or in 3 years. Or even in 6 years when Peavy would have been long gone anyway.
Maybe the Padres doctors and trainers have some inside info on Peavy's physical condition...or for that matter, opposing teams may know about it too. Otherwise, this tiny haul is inexplicable.
Rocinante2: you know Rocinante2: its easy to dismiss the orioles as a bad team ofanrex: go on Rocinante2: i'm done Rocinante2: lmao
given his 08 injury problem and the long term wear and tear on his arm, peavy may be a one year value anyway..his 09 contract is cheap BUT anyone who trades for him is saddled w/ a 3 yr $52M committment that IMO is scaring traders off..no way his 2013 option is picked up ($22M)

Still that 3 year $52M committment is less that $17.3 million a year. Burnett and Sheets are most likely going to get around $15 million a year in FA this year so I don't see Peavy's contract as scary at all.

No way that Peavy accepts to come here I'd think. But, if every team in the league isn't throwing out similar crappy offers in hope that Peavy says yes to their city they are insane.
According to the San Diego Union Tribune, Jake Peavy and his agent have decided that they'd like Yunel Escobar to remain with the Braves if Peavy is traded to Atlanta.
In other words, Peavy wouldn't want his potential new team to be weakened by the trade to get him. "One of the things we will want to look at some point is, 'Who are you giving up? How much are you weakening your team to make this deal?'" agent Barry Axelrod said. "If Team X trades three starting pitchers and a starting shortstop to get Jake Peavy, that lessens their chance of being a successful team." Peavy demanding that the team dealing for him keeps all of its MLB talent would make life a lot tougher on Padres general manager Kevin Towers.

That was a little overblown. The agent said that whomever comes to the Padres in a deal for Peavy would have to be taken into consideration as a decline in overall team strength. Escobar was an example, but he said that he could have used others. The inclusion of Escobar at this point isn't a deal-breaker.
I honestly think the Padres are having money problems, maybe as a by-product of the economic crisis. In the context of the league, Peavy is worth his contract, but an economically-frugal team like the Marlins wouldn't give up anything for him. Could be why they withdrew the Hoffman offer. Giles is probably on his way out too, once they can figure out where he wants to go. I think the Pads are on their way to becoming one of those bottom-of-the-league-in-payroll, craptastic teams.
