Mauer or McLouth as my last keeper?

Postby Pedros Little Friend » Tue Oct 28, 2008 5:52 pm

5x5 Roto, 8 teams, 8 keepers, no limit on the amount of time a player can be kept.

I'm keeping:

Wright
Quentin
Kemp
BJ Upton
Ortiz
Adrian Gonzalez
Tulo

First off, I understand the argument to keep both of these guys over a few of the players listed above. Tulo had a horrible year, but he came on at the end, and I believe his age and ceiling at the thinnest fantasy position make him pretty much a lock. AGone plays first base, which is fairly deep, but he's only under contract thru '10 (though with a team option for '11), and he's put up great numbers everywhere outside of Petco. And Papi...well, he's only going to be DH eligible which is tough, but I think he's still got another elite season or two in him. Those are my thoughts on those guys.

As for the decision, I'll admit to leaning towards Mauer. I've kept him for 2 years now, and I just love watching him hit. That said, if he stays with the Twins for a while, which I have to imagine he will, he'll probably never hit 20 homeruns. Catcher is pretty thin, but there's a few guys I like coming down the pipe. Our league does start two catchers. I like McLouth a lot too. I tabbed him as a guy to target this past season, and it paid off. He could have a bunch of 20/20 seasons ahead of him, but I just get the sense that it probably doesn't actually get any better for him.

Thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated.

I'd choose Mauer. He has been consistent year in and year out. McLouth will be fine, but I'd like to see another year of similar stats before I choose him over Mauer.

I agree with keeping Mauer. Add in the fact you already have 3 OF as keepers it makes the decision that much more sure.

Mauer. He's been money year in and year out and while McLouth could blossom into a semi-stud, I'd rather keep Mauer's consistent solid production.

I would take Mauer. If nothing else, he is a household name that you can deal away if need be.

Mauer for me too. I was not sold on McLouth this year, so I'd keep the safer bet. Plus, Mauer's production comes at the somewhat scarce position of C, while you already have the OF (like bigken said).

I'm not a fan of Mauer but I prefer him over McLouth, who had a Jekyll-and-Hyde season which makes him a bit tricky to assess.
