Agreed. Same with Berk Breathed and Bloom County. We have umpteen decades of Beetle Bailey and Cathy, but comparatively little of what I consider to be wonderful comics.

Only the good die young? Maybe it applies.

While I think he could have made more, maybe it's better to go out on top while still making quality comics than to run out of ideas later.

The Simpsons, for example, should have ended like 8 years ago (whether it be the show or the comics).

I was a huge fan of Calvin, Far Side and Bloom County but they all ended at the right time. They had hit a wall. Outland by Breathed was terrible.

Yes. Unreadable. Painful, especially having known BC before it.

I get what you guys are saying about going out on top. All the same, it's hard to argue with more Calvin, more Far Side or more Bloom County. Maybe that's just me being greedy, or a view brought on by the vacuum left in their absence.

I really haven't read the comics pages since Watterson stopped with Calvin & Hobbes.

Until I saw the article saying he was retiring Opus yesterday, I actually had no idea it existed. I don't really read newsprint anymore, I just get my news online. I haven't been looking for comics, I guess.
