3 years ago I bought: Sin City The Watchmen V for Vendetta Batman: Year One
These were not your traditional comics but really entertaining. The Watchmen is awesome and so is V for Vendetta. Although I really enjoyed the movie, the comic gets much more detailed and is a greater story.
I've also read 300.
"Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that." ~George Carlin
The Watchmen is one of the best. I just finished Alan Moore's Lost Girls. It really sucked. There were some interesting parts but most of the time it just seemed like an excuse to draw dirty pictures and tell dirty stories involving popular characters in literature. But normally, I like almost everything he does.
Some of my favorite comics and graphic novels include:
American Splendor (I've been trying to figure out what else is good in the underground comix genre) Sandman Alan Moore's Top Ten All-Star Superman Love and Rockets Anything by Daniel Clowes (Eightball, Ghost World)
Oooh, you dig some of the weird stuff, although I would have to say All Star Superman is one of the best books out there.
I'm not into titles as much as I am writers (which sucks, because they're constantly moving around). I'll read anything by Mark Millar, Joe Kelly, and Garth Ennis. I know it's mainstream, but if you like the gritty stuff, check out any Punisher arc by Ennis. He was made to write that book. Of course, now he's off it...

i'm maybe 1/4 of the way through Watchmen...i need to pick it back up
i also read the Dark Tower series...that's it for me, but i used to collect a lot of Marvel/DC/Image from late 80's/early 90's which now sit in boxes under my stairs
i will say that i absolutely dread going to my local comic shop though, that place is creepy nerd city and they always want to talk to me. i keep trying to tell them i'm only interested in Dark Tower, here's your $3.50, please let me leave now

I don't really go to comic shops but I feel the same way at video game shops and I would bet that's the same kind of experience.
