Up til now I'd mostly heard that the Indians were looking at making him their primary catcher with Martinez playing first.

Yeah, I would have thought they would hang onto him - he's young and cost-controlled. But, with Garko and VMart, they need to make a decision. I guess it comes down to who can bring the most back for the team at this point.

Interesting article on Shoppach and whether or not he will challenge Cust and Reynolds for the MLB lead in K's:

He might strike out at their rate, but hard to see him ever having Cust's and Reynolds' overall K numbers since he'll probably require much more games off as a catcher.

Yeah, I think its valuable information to have though for those of us who were going into 2009 targeting him as their starting catcher...I'm more apt to let him go at this point.
