So a friend and I were speaking about likely playoff matchups if the Phillies won the division or the wild card, and i came to the conclusion that the rules are very very flawed in terms of matchups for the NLDS. Teams cannot play a team from the same division, thus the Phillies and Mets cannot play each other if both make the playoffs. The wild card winner, which will have a much better record than the Dodgers, will have to play the best team in the league, the Cubs. So instead of the Cubs having to play the lowly Dodgers, they have to face either the Phillies or Mets. The prize of winning the NL East will be having to face the Dodgers in a short series rather than the Cubs in Wrigley.
The rules need to change. Not playing a team from your own division is bogus, as is the number 1 team not playing the team with the worst record, whether its a divisional winner or the wild card winner.
I'm sorry...I read your post and I completely agree, but half the time I was giggling at the word shaft. (side effect: ) Why was this rule implemented in the first place anyway? It's not like this in other sports that have the WC, is it?
Rocinante2: you know Rocinante2: its easy to dismiss the orioles as a bad team ofanrex: go on Rocinante2: i'm done Rocinante2: lmao
This ridiculous 8-team tournament that Bud Selid introduced to replace the playoffs is a farce. The best teams have gotten the shaft in the post season regularly during the Bud Selig era.

by losing to "inferior" teams? that just goes to show you how good these teams were supposed to be to begin with.
personally i feel like the wild card has been a huge success, not just for the league, but for fans. with 30 teams, more than 4 teams need to make the playoffs.
He's a complicated man, and no-one understands him but his womaaaaaaaaaaan.
Apart from this issue, which I agree with Snakes on, I think the play-offs are excellent. Especially when I have money on the winner like last year (thanks Boston) .
Maybe when a new commissioner comes in in a couple of years we'll get WS home field by best record and play-off match-ups by best record.

well if you feel that way, how do you feel about the dodgers?
The Dodgers have been a very good team since Kent hit the DL. They had lost 11 games in a row when Kent got injured and in the 21 games he's missed since the Dodgers are 16-5.
