Don't really think 70 could be enough. If you think, somebody could have Pierre, Tejada, and Abreu. They should have around 90 steals this year. I would say the magic number is about 85. As for me, I have Pierre AND Crawford on one of my squads, so no need to worry there. I also got Crawford on my remaining teams.
70?...85?....thats a joke right?....last year my 12 team al only league....final SB standings went like this...
Team SB
The Irish Knights 162

The Clichés 101
Mass Murderers 99
The Mountaineers 88
GoodFellaz 79
Voodoo Krewe 73

Tool, I wouldn't say it's a joke.
That's because in the AL only league you guys probably locked up the majority of the AL players that were stealing bases. In mixed leagues there are going to be a lot of FA's that steal bases but aren't going to get picked up. (i.e. DeVanon 17, Rivas 17, Crisp 15, Eckstein 16, Figgins 13, Harris 12, and on and on and on....)
In my 18 team league, 6 teams had over 100 SB's. The average team had more than 80 SB's. That's even more watered down than a 12 team league. You better have 120+ if you hope to win the SB category in a 12 team league.
The problem with just picking a number out of a hat by guessing at what players could be on a team is that you miss out on the little 12 SB guys, 9 SB guys, because it all adds up. If you want a prediction to be accurate, then look at actual results from competitive leages. Otherwise a prediction is pointless.
"Jack, will you call me, if you're able?"
"I've got your phone number written, in the back of my Bible."
My team so far has 114 steals from last year, and I still have 4 starting offensive positions to fill. So I don't think 80 will win it, especially when Pierre (who thankfully is on my team) got 65 by himself last year.

OF the guys you mentioned eckstein was probly the only regular in one of our lineups. In fact i had crisp and rivas and both were on my bench and didnt see a day of action on my active roster...

Those are only some of the players. Going by your standings, your league managed to rack up 1209 of the possible 1279 steals from the American League in 2003. So there weren't many sitting on the bench.
12 team league... but how many positions, and is there some kind of limit in regards to streaming players in and out of your lineup daily. I could give some good numbers in a 12 team 5x5 yahoo public league mixed.
In the mock drafts I've been running to make the top 5 in SBs you will need anywhere from 110 to 118 SBs.
shoot for 100 and don't worry about it...if you're in position to grab a few quick points in SB's, you can always deal to get someone like Sanchez for not a lot.
