H0rt: So y = r cubed over 3. And if you determine the rate of change in this curve correctly, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
[The class laughs except for AussieDodger who appears confused.]
Teacher: Don't you get it, AussieDodger? Derivative dy = 3 r squared dr over 3, or r squared dr, or r dr r.

I learned next to no mathematics in High School. I think I took the bare minimum, which is why you never see me getting into conversations about stats here on the Cafe. I have a comfortable relationship with functional math (the kind of everyday math you do at home: checkbooks, recipes, averages, etc.). The best thing I ever heard about math was to break everything down into tens. Multiplication & division become so much easier to do in your head when you do that, and even simple addition/subtraction gets easier. But I'm a grammar/creative kind of person, not analytical. So no matter how great of a teacher you may be, h0rt, I'm sure as a teenager I would have been daydreaming through most of your class.

Wow. That editorial writer would have saved himself a whole lot of trouble if he had simply written:
"I'm old. I'm going to ridicule stoners. Mentally insert into this space what you think someone old would write about young stoners."

He must have seen Reefer Madness a few times. Special props at 0:37 in that clip as he spends half the movie sitting in that same chair laughing like a hyena.
