They know their partner but are competing against each other and do not know the other two.

Each will get a chance to kill at night.

One doctor and one investigator right?

The balancing factor, I think, is that the mafia can accidentally kill each other. Well, they actually want to kill each other, but I would presume timing is imperative.

Point of clarification: If a mafia member dies (by lynching or assassination), will we find out if the mafia is from family number one or number two? Or will we just be told that the person was a mafioso?

It will be said which family they are from, the investigator will be told only mafia/townie.
