Kershaw Down/Elbert Up

Postby Snakes Gould » Fri Aug 29, 2008 1:10 pm

Aug 28 LHP Scott Elbert, the Dodgers' first-round draft pick in 2004, will have his contract purchased from Class AA Jacksonville on Friday. The call-up will be the first of Elbert's professional career, and it comes without his ever having spent a day in Class AAA. Elbert missed most of last season with a shoulder injury, but he posted a 2.40 ERA at Jacksonville this season, allowing just 22 hits in 41 1/3 innings.

elbert worth a shot in standard leagues? kershaw was looking really good for a while there and hit a rough patch. im sure if it was june or july the dodgers would let him work through his troubles.

To be honest, I haven't followed much on Elbert but he doesn't necessarily have the kind of raw stuff Kershaw has. He has two plus offerings like Kershaw but he's shown improvement in his command since his first stint in Jacksonville. Elbert's walk rate is still a little up there but he's still managing a solid K rate. The Dodgers once thought they could groom Elbert as middle reliever or a closer if they ever had to dangle Broxton as trade bait which makes this move somewhat of a surprise. I'd watch him but don't think he's an immediate add yet.

I dont have an opinion on Elbert, but kershaw is coming back for his next start.

He's most likely just going to be an arm in the pen since Kershaw's last start stretched them all out (has only started 1g all year). Though in the future as long as he can stay healthy he could have a Broxton like role and possibly close if he goes elsewhere.
