What was wrong with Phil

:-B Ok lets see if I understand the logic here. I'm the GM, I have an All-Star 3rd baseman... Hmm lets move him to first for a rookie. Okay...done..Oops rookie bust's, but in true Padre's fashion shows promise late. (Bubba Trammel got a nice fat contract for showing promise late and it has been painful to watch since.) Ok lets try the rookie again, but that All Star guy.. hmm well the only position we have for him is OF, Go figure. (I am high on Burroughs though) But check this out. Apparently the Pads tried to get Alfonzo during the offseason. Discussing streamling the management process during the offseason I found this quote.
Towers said. "For example, when we made an offer to (free-agent) Edgardo Alfonzo this winter, John was right there, and it took only half an hour to put in a call to make the offer to his agent."

So I ask you..........What was wrong with Phil?

Don't forget they also tried to deal Phil to Cincy for Griffey. Aside from giving Burroughs another chance to be in the starting lineup this year, there's also the fact that Nevin doesn't necessarily have the greatest glove in the world. Burroughs will be better defensively at third base than Nevin. I'm not extremely high on Burroughs by any means (I was one of the many managers burned by his first half stats last year!), bur I understand a little why they made the move.
