Mets Youth & NY Media

Postby Amazinz » Thu Aug 21, 2008 9:00 am

I am almost fell out of my chair when I saw this article. The last several years the NY media has blindly promoted the notion that Yankees farm system = talent and Mets farm system = lack of talent. Even here at the Cafe, when I tried to argue the point last season I was laughed at. (Not that I saw Daniel Murphy coming :-D). Anyway, rant over but it's a nice changed of pace to see an article like this even if it is after the fact.

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

No one saw Murphy coming and now he will be overhyped just like Melky was. Neither are good chances to be above average OF but they get some success in NY and the media pumps them up. It works the other way too. Pelfrey was horrible so everyone wrote him off. I'm sure some will write of Hughes too but he will most likely be a good MLB pitcher. Mostly I think the article stresses that the Yankees youngsters fell on their face.

My issue is that the media routinely and incorrectly portrays the two farm systems in different lights. The media's coverage of the minor league systems is really bad in NY. I don't disagree with any of your points but the media's coverage of Melky, Big Pelf, Hughes, now Murphy, etc., was all coverage that happened after the players hit the show.
