California Lawmakers Say Electric Cars Danger to Blind

Postby JTWood » Wed Aug 20, 2008 9:02 am

CNN.com wrote: SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- Electric and hybrid vehicles may be better for the environment, but the California Legislature says they're bad for the blind.

It has passed a bill to ensure that the vehicles make enough noise to be heard by visually impaired people about to cross a street.

The measure would establish a committee to study the issue and recommend ways the vehicles could make more noise.

What are blind people doing trying to cross the street without help anyway?

Something I've never understood - is those crossing lights that "chirp" so that blind people know when they can cross, how do the blind people know where the orad is to stop and wait for the chirp?

I don't think that this is anti-hybrid at all it is just recognizing a potential danger to a segment of the population and looking for a solution to the danger. If I was blind and had to rely on my hearing for my safety I would be afraid of hybrids and bicycles. Cars in general have gotten quieter and that's a danger not only to the blind but to all pedestrians. Solutions such as banning cell phone use in the car (or anything else that would distract drivers), crack down on jaywalking or try to make it less socially acceptable and crack down on running lights and not coming to a stop at intersections would help not only the blind but all pedestrians.

I have a Santa Fe that is so quiet that I've driven behind people in a parking lot and they had no idea I was there, for quite some distance.

I see where they're coming from here, but let's face it - you can't put rubber bumpers on the whole planet. Existence is fraught with danger. If we're going to try to make sure this or that is safe, where does it stop?

From my observation, California lawmakers are a danger to Californians.

Yes doctor, I am sick.
Sick of those who are spineless.
Sick of those who feel self-entitled.
Sick of those who are hypocrites.
Yes doctor, an army is forming.
Yes doctor, there will be a war.
Yes doctor, there will be blood.....

Reminds me of an old Brad Stine bit, "Put a Helmet On!" There are several links to this bit on YouTube, but I don't know if they're SFW. It's worth checking out.

I don't get this attitude at all. When I was born seat belts were not used and motorcyclists did not wear helmets. Today we think that people that don't use these basic safety devices are reckless. Things change, nothing more so than cars and traffic. If we can make some changes that will save lives why not do it? Today we may find that it's intrusive but in ten years time it will be viewed as basic safety along with the seat belt and the bike helmet.
