First of all, this is essentially irrelevant fantasy-wise. Losing Melky may be a blow to some teams in AL-Onlies, but mixed leagures should have found much better options by now...
In real life terms, Gardner has really been forcing the Yankees hand. He might be somewhat fantasy relevant, but I don't think so (Matsui's coming back soon; I think he takes over role as 4th OF once Matsui's back). And Melky hasn't been good this year; getting him some ABs in AAA for a few weeks until rosters expand could give him a chance to learn some things in a lower-pressure environment.
I would think they could get something for Sexson in a trade. He does hit lefties pretty well, and the team that would take him would be paying him the prorated major-league minimum. I understand why they got rid of Sexson for a few reasons though. He's better than Giambi vs LHP, but they are more similar than one would think (Giambi still walks a great deal vs. lefties). The big problem with the Yankees (I think) is that they needed to clear a bench spot for a real backup infielder. Betemit, while a good pinch-hitting specilalist and backup corner infielder, is simply unacceptable at SS or 2B defensively. Christian needs to stay for pinch-running and 4th OF. Molina's the backup C. The fourth spot should really be a real utility man. There's no room for a 5th bench spot; the rotation is in such shambles Yankees need as many RPs as possible in that bullpen.
I also believe possible that Richie was very unhappy with his role, as he's been an everyday player for quite a few years now, he was forced to move from West Coast to East Coast, and he was basically a PH/defensive replacement with the Yankees.
I guess these are fine moves by Cashman. I'm happy (as a Red Sox fan) that he got rid of Sexson though; that guy beats up lefties....
