Raul Ibanez Rumors

Wed, Aug 13 Conflicting reports have emerged as to whether Ibanez has been claimed off waivers. Foxsports.com says Ibanez was claimed Tuesday, giving the Mariners until Thursday to make a deal, while the Seattle Times quotes an AL scout who says Ibanez was never placed on waivers in the first place.

Recommendation: This will be a fun little battle of sources. The scout quoted by the Seattle Times says he receives the official MLB waiver list and Ibanez's name has not been on it. The Fox report quotes unnamed "major league sources." The Mariners might be better off just hanging onto Ibanez. If he leaves as a free agent this offseason, they'd receive two compensation picks. And even re-signing him to a one-year deal (if possible) wouldn't be the worst thing in the world considering the way he's swung the bat this season. It all depends on what the team can get for him.

I just hope he goes somewhere in which he can drive in some runs. I lucked out with Bay going to Boston.

I wouldn't be surprised if 20 teams claimed him. He has a small contract and will likely be a type A FA (2 draft picks). And he's fairly good at baseball (at least the hitting part). There is almost no risk in putting in a waiver claim.

Seriously, why wouldnt the Sox claim Ibanez to block Tampa Bay from getting him? They have a worse record than the Devil Rays and therefore they get to claim players on waivers before the Devil Rays. That's the way the Waiver system works.

Of course the Sox could claim a player to block the Rays from getting that player and then be stuck with a giant contract, but with Ibanez I don't think that's a big concern.

Both players will stick with the team for the rest of the season. The Tigers were the team that put in a claim on Ibanez, and Minnesota made a claim on Washburn - likely to block the White Sox, who were thought to be interested.

Its kind of funny how the team that needs pitching puts a claim in on yet another hitter and the team that has great pitching and a set rotation puts a claim in on a pitcher.
