The Boston Herald reports that Mike Lowell is likely to be placed on the disabled list after leaving Tuesday's game with a strained right oblique.
Lowell was scheduled to undergo an MRI exam Wednesday morning and oblique injuries are notoriously slow to heal. "It's frustrating because I've never had this happen before," Lowell said. "I'd like to avoid [the DL], but the doc said it's a possibility. I think right now it's probably too early. After the MRI, they'll have a lot more information." With Lowell out and Jed Lowrie needed at shortstop, the Red Sox figure to shift Kevin Youkilis to third base and play Sean Casey regularly at first base.
