The brilliance is that they didn't even work hard on making this realistic. Litterally, they froze a rubber bigfoot outfit.... BAM! They have America by the balls. There is no way they thought that would work out as well as it did... no way.
In that article Knapp posted it says that one of the duo, the police officer, lost his job. Presumably they didn't make much money, the DVD was not available prior to the hoax getting "exposed". So... Unless you consider the proverbial 15 minutes of fame your goal in life I would say this didn't work out well at all. It actually blew up in the police officer's face.
