Longoria to DL with wrist fracture

SAN FRANCISCO—The Rays have placed Evan Longoria on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured right wrist and recalled outfielder Justin Ruggiano from Durham.

Longoria was hit by a pitch Thursday night in Seattle and did not play in the final three games of the Mariners series. X-rays taken immediately after he was injured showed no fracture, and Longoria said as recently as Sunday afternoon that he was feeling better and hoped to play in Tuesday’s game at Oakland.

There is still no word on the severity of Carl Crawford’s injury, but Rays executive vice president Andrew Friedman is expected to provide an update to the media around 6:30 p.m. today. Crawford could be done for the season after suffering a subluxation of the tendon in his right middle finger Saturday night. He flew home to Tampa yesterday and was to be examined by hand specialist Dr. Doug Carlan this afternoon.

Ruggiano, 26, could end up playing regularly in the Rays’ outfield unless they make a move for a more established player through a waiver claim. Ruggiano has enjoyed a stellar season for Durham, hitting .315 with 18 doubles, 11 homers and 51 RBIs in 66 games while also stealing 20 bases in 23 attempts. He made 15 appearances with the Rays earlier this season and hit .290, collecting his first big-league homer June 21 against the Astros.

More to come…

OH CRAP.

Rotoworld describes it as "a fracture that will sideline the AL's leading Rookie of the Year candidate for at least two weeks" -- Do they just mean that b/c he's on the 15-day dl, it's at least 2 weeks, or is there any hope that he'll actually get back this year? I've just never heard of a wrist fracture healing that fast.

It is interesting. They x-rayed it the day after he got hit and they said there was absolutely no break. Now they say it is a wrist fracture. Strange. I have heard that they think he may be out for longer than the 15 days

Well, there's some chance that the X-rays don't pick up on a fracture that seems relatively minute.
