Lance Berkman--what's going on?

Postby acapulco » Wed Aug 06, 2008 9:58 pm

Does anyone know what's going on w LanceBerkman? After a torrid start he's now 22 for his last 95. Injury or just a plain old-fashioned slump? And should I start thinking about trading him?

After probably the best 3 month span in his career over April, May and June he seemingly hit a brick wall in July. Despite the fact that he's still drawing walks and stealing bases, he's hurting fantasy teams more than helping them right now IMO. A slowdown from his amazing start should have been expected, but nothing like this.

His power is just gone. His SLG and ISO have been nosediving lately and I have yet to see a significant sign of a turnaround in that department. Its been going on long enough that I think it's something fantasy owners should be concerned about. I don't know if he's hiding an injury or something of that sort, but I'm starting to think something's up.

Yet he's still an elite hitter and since everyone has their highs and lows I'm not trying to suggest that he's not still going to be an asset in fantasy leagues down the stretch. I'd say if you can get a top 25 fantasy player for him you should probably take it, but if not then get him on your bench and ride out the slump. He's bound to bust out of it eventually.

He'll break out of it eventually. He was playing a bit over his head, but he should start to hit for some power with a decent average the rest of the way.

I really hope so. I need the offense down the stretch here. :-o

I'm thinking of offering another team Berkman, G Sherrill (he needs an rp), and 1 of my SPs (possibly Vazquez or Greinke) for Jason Bay and a pitcher like Jon Lester or James Shields. Am I offering too much? not enough? Is he likely to go for it?

Berkman's a tough one. Obviously, you (and I, for that matter) should have tried to sell in June, but hindsight's 20/20. I've been trying to trade him all summer, but no one's biting despite his #1 yahoo 5x5 rank.

I think that if you're looking to trade him, his percieved value (by others) seems to be around a mid 2nd rounder, just to give you an idea...good luck!

Nope. You should have shopped him when his value couldn't possibly have gotten any higher, don't sell him low now. ;-D
