'Lonely Man on the Corner'
Abacab, and subsequently Man on the Corner, is the cut-off point for me. The self-titled album has decent cuts (Mama, Home By the Sea), but Invisible Touch/We Can't Dance both suck.
Just went back and listened through the Genesis self titled. I think that's my favorite one. Silver Rainbow, Job to Do, and Mama were the highlights for me. I also think Illegal Alien is goofy and cheesy but awesome at the same time...
I do agree We Can't Dance was a little too much like Phil's solo stuff (Genesis doing adult contemporary? ), but I liked Invisible Touch. The title track is my least favorite, but Land of Confusion, Domino, and the Brazilian are great, IMO...
Now I'm on a huge Genesis kick...

The second side to Invisible Touch is strong (especially Domino), but in a relative sense everything after Abacab (maybe even including) was poor. You're the only person I know who feels the self-titled is the best album. It's good, but not my dig personally. Wind and Wuthering is easily my favorite post-Gabriel album and if I had to choose a favorite Gabriel album it would probably have to be Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Its neo-punk/prog feel is powerful and while there are weak spots on the album, it's possibly the greatest prog rock album of all time.
To be honest, my favorite stuff by then was what was out when I was a kid, hence the post - Abacab love. I'll definitely have to check out some of the older stuff though, Pat Bateman...

Well, I've never been a big fan of prog so that's issue #1. I think if I just had it on my turntable in the background it would be nice, but when I tried to actually sit down and listen to it I didn't like it much. That's my usual attitude towards prog rock.
Not really my favorite song per se, but if you have never heard of Vampire Weekend you might want to give them a try. I came across their self-titled first album today and it's pretty awesome. There's really no accurate way to describe the music.
