Jim Caple on Closers

Postby mtxdevil » Tue Aug 05, 2008 5:02 pm

Hey, an article on ESPN that isn't utterly worthless. I have been thinking the same way about closers for years now. If they're supposedly your top reliever, why don't use them in more "intense" situations? The save is a useless stat, and closers are overvalued.

Not sure when he wrote this, but pretty sure KRod entered the game last night with a couple of runners aboard... a proceeded to blow the save.

Not an original argument but well-written article nonetheless and nice to see it on ESPN. Really liked Beane's comment about the media.

Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey
