I just looked up Ramirez's stats for this year and, surprisingly, he's been a serviceable reliever in the 15 innings he's pitched. It sounds like the Sox are going to experiment with DJ Carrasco, and possibly Broadway if Carrasco doesn't get the job done, as their fifth before the throw Ramirez in there.
Either way, the Sox are going to be hurting for a fifth starter over the next couple months.
Red Sox acquired RHP Paul Byrd from the Indians for a player to be named later or cash. With Tim Wakefield hurting and Clay Buchholz struggling, the Red Sox went out and got a veteran starter for the stretch run. Byrd is 7-10 with a 4.53 ERA and the 37-year-old will be a free agent after the season. With Charlie Zink scheduled to start in Wakefield's place Wednesday, the Red Sox could either bump him from the rotation after one outing or replace Buchholz, who's scheduled to pitch Friday. For the Indians, Aaron Laffey is the obvious choice to replace Byrd in the rotation and having some success earlier this season. Aug. 12 - 3:47 pm et
In other news, Sweaty Freddy Garcia has been picked up by the Detroit Tigers.
SI.com reports that the Tigers have signed free agent Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract. Garcia hasn't pitched since last June following shoulder surgery and reportedly wasn't especially impressive while working out for a dozen teams earlier this month, but the Tigers could certainly use the pitching help as much as any contending team. He'll report to Single-A for what figures to be at least a couple starts before potentially joining the Detroit staff, but don't expect any fantasy value this season.
I think they could.. 1. he is from here. and 2. we have a lost a good righty in Longoria and CC is out so we need some offense from somewhere.
But I wonder what happens to his contract and what we would have to give...
Umm I'm pretty sure that the Tigers would just let the Rays take him and assume the full contract next season for nothing. It will be more interesting to see if anyone works out a deal for Sheffield after he clears waivers. The only way that I can see another team trading for him is if the Tigers are eating a significant portion of the salary.

Ibanez would be a great fit for the Rays, but like the article said, I doubt seriously that another American League team would let them fall to the Rays
Seattle outfielder Raul Ibanez has reportedly been claimed on waivers and could be traded today, but the team that won the claim is not the Twins, a person familiar with the situation told the Star Tribune.
ESPN’s Buster Olney noted today that the Twins might be interested in Ibanez. This makes sense because of Michael Cuddyer’s foot injury, but Denard Span has been more than adequate as a replacement in right field.
The Mariners have a few more hours to work a deal with whatever team did win the claim, so we should know soon. The Rays are definitely interested, but the Red Sox might have put in a claim to block that move.
Note: I’ve changed the wording, as it’s possible the Twins did put in a claim on Ibanez but were beat to it by another team ahead of them on the claiming list. I do know the Twins like Ibanez, but I’ve been told that they are not the team in negotiations with the M’s. …
Here is the order of the AL claiming teams in contention (From MLBTradeRumors)
Tigers Rangers Blue Jays Yankees Twins White Sox Red Sox Rays Angels
The article makes it sound at first liek someone above the Rwins took Ibanez, but later it sounds like the Twins aren't the team and he doesn't know if it is because they were beat, or just did not try to get him. I am holding out hope hee fell to the Rays, but I highly doubt it
