Understandable... I'd much rather stay on a team that is 27 games under .500 than go to a team that has a chance to win a championship. Reminiscent of Kenny Rogers refusing to be traded to the Reds a few years back to stay on the last place Rangers. Whatever.

I bet he would have gone if the Sox planned on starting him. As it is, they probably just did it to block the Devil Rays and you can't blame a guy for not wanting to sit on the bench (presumably).
Maine has a good swing for a pitcher but on anything that moves, he has no chance. And if it's a fastball, it has to be up in the zone. Basically, the pitcher has to hit his bat. - Mike Pelfrey

I'd much rather start for a non-playoff team over sitting on the bench for a playoff team but that might just be me.

Not me, if I were in his shoes - the guy is 37 years old, nearing the end of a career where he has sniffed a title once, 10 years ago. We're only talking 2+ months here, then he could go back and be the 3rd outfielder (if he's lucky) on a crappy team next year. Why not take a shot at a ring?

Right so different people see things differently. So you can't criticize a guy for wanting to be a full time player versus a bench player.

Agree, to each is his own is the way you have to look at it. Some players (especially players who have always been every-day players) just don't feel comfortable with a part-time role and there's nothing wrong with that.

I guess. Though that still doesn't get Kenny Rogers off the hook back in 2002... he's still a loser.

He doesnt want to move his family or move too far away from them. Understandable. If it was purely a baseball decision, I'm sure he would be on a playoff team's roster right now.

exactly what i was going to say. i dont think people look at the personal side of trades. he and his family hypothetically would have to move 3000 miles to a strange city and basically live out of a hotel for 2 months and then possibly have to move again. sounds rough. but for one shot a championship before i retire, id give it a shot.
