Don't drop Morrow just yet

Postby harold_bush » Thu Jul 31, 2008 9:54 am

The Seattle Post Intelligencer reports that the Mariners have made J.J. Putz available in trade talks.

The newspaper notes that the Red Sox and Mets "have popped up as possible trading partners" for Putz, who would likely draw plenty of interest throughout both leagues even given his injury concerns. If Putz is traded, the Mariners could reconsider their plans to move Brandon Morrow into the rotation.

I posted on the closers thread the unrealistic return the Ms were expecting for Washburn which makes me wonder what they would want for Putz.IMO I think today is D-Day in terms of Morrow closing or starting. If Putz stays, Morrow will most likely be sent to Triple A to get stretched out to start in Sept.If Putz is traded Morrow will be the closer this season and beyond IMO.

Any chance Morrow returns to the closer's role, or does Putz have it on lock down? Will they split time?

From Rotoworld...
According to the Seattle Post Intelligencer, J.J. Putz is nearing a return to the closer role.
Once Putz reclaims ninth-inning duties the Mariners are expected to send Brandon Morrow to Triple-A, where he'll prepare for a move to the rotation. "They want Brandon to start, and they are waiting for me to get going," Putz said.

Brandon Morrow optioned to Triple A
From Rotoworld:
Mariners optioned RHP Brandon Morrow to Triple-A Tacoma.

The Mariners have decided to have Morrow spend the rest of the year as a starter, even though it greatly increases the chances that he'll get hurt. He'll likely spend two or three weeks in Triple-A and then join Seattle's rotation. J.J. Putz will return to the closer's role. Aug. 5 - 5:50 pm et

Anyone think Morrow is a good pickup during the H2H stretch run (if you have the room to stash him)? Is he worth it? What are some of you projecting for him as a starter?
